The Witcher 2 Digital Sales Close In On 250K
In this age of first-person shooters and games about being an assassin in the renaissance era, you wouldn’t expect an RPG out of Poland to sell all that much. However, that’s where you’d be wrong, because CD Projekt has announced that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has sold nearly 250,000 copies through digital distribution alone.

That’s a hefty chunk of the combined retail and digital sales of one million CD Projekt reported back in August. CD Projekt says that The Witcher 2 sold the most through Steam, where they picked up 195,000 digital sales. Their own digital distribution service, Good Old Games, moved around 35,000 copies, while CD Projekt says that The Witcher 2 sold around 10,000 on all of the other digital distribution services combined.
While 250,000 digital sales are great, I’m actually kind of disappointed to see such a huge discrepancy between Steam and GOG’s numbers. With so many PC gamers out there complaining about DRM, I would have expected them to go through GOG, where The Witcher 2 is available DRM-free, instead of using Steam out of some misplaced sense of allegiance.
Still, even though I’m wondering why more gamers didn’t use GOG to buy The Witcher 2, I’m glad to see that the game is doing so well. CD Projekt is quite obviously a studio that puts great games first, and it’s nice to see it and its Witcher series garner so much support.
So, what do you say? Are you glad to see The Witcher series doing so well with these later Witcher 2 numbers, or did The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings fail to grab you? Do you think we’ll see a Witcher 3 now that CD Projekt is reporting these great numbers for The Witcher 2?
