RIM Remains Committed To Flash For The BlackBerry PlayBook

Adobe Killed Flash, But It Will Not Be Going Away Entirely, Enter RIM With Their Pledge To Continue Native Flash Player Support On The PlayBook Tablet

Look, we are sure that there are numerous jokes that could come as a result of this news — however we will leave those up to you — the reader. That being said, while Adobe recently killed of Flash for mobile devices, it looks like RIM is not quite ready to say goodbye.

Of course, that is not to say that RIM will be going in without any clue. In fact, they have acknowledged HTML5 and is looks like they will be offering support for both. Well, both depending on the BlackBerry device in hand. Anyway, here are the details as to what RIM had to say;

“As an Adobe source code licensee, we will continue to work on and release our own implementations. RIM remains committed to delivering an uncompromised Web browsing experience to our customers, including native support for Adobe Flash Player on our BlackBerry PlayBook tablet (similar to a desktop PC browser), as well as HTML5 support on both our BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook browsers,” RIM said in a statement to AllThingsD. “In fact, we are pleased that Adobe will focus more efforts on the opportunities that HTML5 presents for our developers, and shares our commitment to HTML5 as we discussed together at DevCon Americas.”

Bottom line, this may sound strange to some, heck it sounds strange to us — but we must remember that Flash and the ability to browse to and properly experience any website has been a major selling point in terms of PlayBook advertising. And in the end, while RIM is going to maintain and continue to push development of Flash on their own — it is nice to see that HTML5 is not far from their mind. More to the point, it is nice to see that they are also remaining “committed” to HTML5, especially given how it seems that is the winner.
