Modern Warfare 3 vs Battlefield 3: Latest Call of Duty Title Sells 9.3 Million Copies on Release Date
Activisions’ Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 started selling a few days ago and the game is flying off the shelves. In fact, we’re currently looking at the most impressive launch in gaming history judging by the number of copies sold on launch date.

Modern Warfare 3 managed to sell 9.3 million in the first day and the game is expected to sell 12-13.5 million copies in the first week. That would put the total of sold Call of Duty games at over 100 million, including previous episodes of the franchise.
Out of the 9.3 million copies sold in the first day about 54% were the Xbox 360 version followed by the PlayStation version with 42% – that comes down to over 5 million and around 4 million copies, respectively, for each platform. VG Chartz notes that this is the first game to have sold 5 million units on one single platform on the first day of sales, which is certainly impressive. PC and Wii sales accounted for just 370,000 units, or around 4% of the total. 7 million copies were sold in the U.S. and UK alone which means there’s plenty of room for more growth.
Speaking of growth, Modern Warfare 3 saw an increase in first day sales of 55% and 33% compared to Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, respectively.
Its main rival, Battlefield 3, sold 5 million units in the first week, so I’d say Modern Warfare 3 pretty much pocketed an impressive win against its archenemy. Word on the street is that Battlefield 4 is already in development, and with all the cash Modern Warfare 3 is going to pile up, it’ll be interesting if a fourth version will be coming out next year to further compete against EA’s next installment of its Battlefield franchise.
Let’s hear it from you, gamers, do you think there’s any upcoming game out there capable of beating this impressive sales performance? Can Skyrim, which is going on sale tomorrow, pull a similar performance?

Why do people even buy call of duty games anymore? its the same thing every year, save your money and buy and older copy from 2008 or something.Skyrim won’t beat out modern warfare, there are too many suckers for crap out there that cant see a good game when it pops up in their faces, just like what happened to battlefield.
Have you ever thought maybe you are the sucker? Call of Duty is a top selling game because of the fast paced fire fights instead of Battlefield 3(which i enjoy playing also so i am not onesided) which is a sniper fest, tanks around every corner and a slower paced game. personally i think that anybody that doesnt play both and enjoy both series just suck at first person shooters or you are just a poor bastard and cant afford both
I completely agree with Alex. Battlefield 3 is far more superior to any Call Of Duty game in every way. It really makes me sad to see people are still feeding the biggest cashcow of all time. Skyrim I can tell you is probably one of the best games I’ve played in the last 10 years, along with Battlefield 2, 3 and Batman Arkham Asylum (I’ve yet to play Arkham City). The new COD title was just a half assed project thrown together by 2 different companies. Why can’t these “game developers” think of anything new, original or creative? When Treyarch makes the next COD game, which will be a remake like usual, people will wet their nerd pants like they did over this pathedic ensemble.
hey look it’s the 1%.
I can’t believe people actually payed $60 for DLC.
do you even have bf3 I dont remember there being a sniper fest in any game modes on bf3 its more team based from my view.
and i have to say i bought mw3 3 days ago and i returned it back the very next day, im not going to spend 60 bucks for something that feels like a copy and paste of the previous game online feels different though. with the added features but it isnt enough to keep me playing.
Ok, so both games have their faults and credits. Both are totally different styles, and no one can argue Battlefield 3 wipes the floor with MW3 on graphics, atmosphere and sound. That isn’t to say MW3 is not a good contender, the single player, although repetitive of the previous MW’s, does hold stronger than BF3. But who are we kidding, multiplayer is where it is at.
Before I played BF3 I was MW through and through. I liked BF2 but was not a big enough fan to actually stick with it. But like most of the comments above, I was furious to pay so much for MW3 and get so little. It literally is the same as MW2… Although the maps are laid out poorly, doorways in centre of building so you can’t check corners quickly on multiplayer so get camp killed. Small maps… tiny in fact, soldiers stick out like a sore thumb as nothing else moves, no trees or nothing swaying with bullets flying past them so it is so easy to spot moving players. It is truly disgusting that such a lazy developer can get away with 9m sales on the first day… Selling purely on the name.
I will be trading mine back in for cash, I would rather just trade in for 35, purchase MW2 and a map pack and have endless fun on that with money to spare for a pizza and some beers! Sorted!
I would love to see how many get returned. Or perhaps a poll on how many of those 9m are indeed happy…
I started playing COD with Modern Warfare, and that game was undoubtedly the best shooter that was ever made up until that point. It completely revolutionalized first person shooters. I have been a loyal fan up until now buying game after game, year after year. This year though, I decided to play BF3. I have been blown away with this game. The graphics and sound are amazing, and the different multiplayer game types are refreshing. After playing the game for about a month now, I decided to not get MW3. I am sure that the game is fun and I would play it, but from everything I have read, it is basically a really big map pack release for MW2. So I am speaking with my cash and am not going to support a half hearted game franchise until I see something more impressive. BF3 is completely different game play/style then MW3, but it is new and excitiing for me and I will stick with it until something better comes along. I wish MW3 got a new game engine and better graphics like BF3 did with Frostbite 2, I probably would have got it again.
call of duty will without a doubt be developed with at new engine, but not before new consoles are released, the reason why call of duty graphic is so weak is because it runs 60fps on the consoles, and the pc version is just a port.
Well believe it sucka. An testatment to how fun Modern Warfare is.
I hated the Battlefield series until Bad Company 2 came out. I was going to let Call of Duty go and buy BF3 when it came out. I didn’t for one reason…Origin.
I’ve already chosen my DRM client…Steam. EA wants die hards to buy BF3 through Origin first so they could force their own terrible DRM client. Think I’m being ridiculous? Let’s see if EA puts BF3 on Steam after the initial sales die down. This is typical EA.
It’s irrelevant to me now because instead of buying BF3, I bought 2 copies of MW3 for my 2 Steam accounts. I feel sorry for DICE.
way to spend smartly boy genius
you idiot fanboys and doing one thing and one thing only with this silly rivalry and that is lining the pockets of both EA and Activition
all you Battlefield ones ripping apart everything you possibly can about Modern Warfare and just making fans want to buy it more to annoy you
how about you all enjoy the game you bought and not care what anybody else does. EA’s marketing of Battlefield has been an embarressment and DICE clearly feel the same way
Modern warfare 3 is more superior than BF3
BF3 is boring and slow.Talk about the graphics all you want but i would rather play at 60 frames per second with better servers and better control.Oh,and 1 more thing, you represent the minority.Bf3 will never take the throne from COD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
amen
personally i liked the new my little pony game…
I really hope that the next installment of the Call of Duty franchise will use up a lump of the cash that Modern Warfare 3 brought in to update the grafics, textures, character animations and so on, so that it can compete with EA’s Battlefield 3. I have to say, if Call of Duty were to completely start from scratch and go towards an entirly new game engine… it would look damn good. But, with the way that Call of Duty keeps selling, I don’t think they would need to do anything to the game to make it sell even more.
COD sucks through and through. It’s 60fps because it blacks out half the screen with dark textures. I couldn’t see where I was going through half the game. The plot was crap, the level design was crap. The online play is a spray-fest full of 10 year old boys screaming and choking their chickens. The original modern warfare was revolutionary…but it has NOT improved, nor has it changed. Everything about the guns felt fake…the sound was just horrid. I ended up moving to BF3. Aside of Origin being a complete pain in the rear, it blows away Modern warfare…IF you can handle realism, and move away from the arcade type spray and pray.
