Mass Effect 3 DRM, Co-Op Detailed

Mass Effect 3 Will Require Single Online Activation, No Local Co-Op In Galaxy At War Mode At Launch

The release is Mass Effect 3 is just a few months away, and when it arrives, it’s bound to change the Mass Effect series we’ve all come to love thanks to BioWare’s new co-op mode. I’m not saying that BioWare’s decision to add co-op in Mass Effect 3 was bad by any means – on the contrary, I’m looking forward to giving it a spin – but there are some out there who are understandably apprehensive about Mass Effect 3‘s co-op mode.

In a new interview with the BioWare blog, Mass Effect 3 producer Jesse Houston sat down to explain some finer points about Mass Effect 3‘s co-op mode, as well as touch on what we can expect DRM-wise. Since it’s pretty much a sure thing that Mass Effect 3 will require an Origin install before you can play it on your PC, I’m sure there are some who are worried about what kind of DRM Electronic Arts will use to protect the game.

As it turns out, there’s nothing to fear really, because Houston said that Mass Effect 3‘s DRM will only require a one-time activation online the first time you boot it up. After that, you’ll be free to play Mass Effect 3 offline as much as you want. This is definitely a relief, because the always-on DRM that some publishers like Ubisoft like to use is beginning to wear on my patience.

Now, onto the details about Mass Effect 3‘s co-op. Houston dished a lot of details in his interview with the BioWare blog, so we’ll touch on some of the more important points. First off, Mass Effect 3‘s co-op mode won’t use Kinect in any way, and Houston teases that it has playable characters other than Krogan, Asari, and Drell that “you may not expect.”

The game’s co-op mode will also eventually have downloadable characters, and unfortunately for those that would prefer to play with their friends in person, it won’t have local play at launch. That doesn’t mean it won’t ever have local play, however, as Houston says that adding local co-op post-launch is “definitely,” on the table.

Those are some of the major points about Mass Effect 3‘s Galaxy At War mode – what do you think? Are you all for Mass Effect 3‘s co-op mode, or are you still feeling a little uneasy about it? Well after hearing about this “origin” spyware thing that is getting foisted on BF3 players (a game I was thinking of buying until I heard you had to install that) I am now seriously worried about ME3, first co-op and now this. The devs have already proved to be liars and cannot be trusted with the whole multiplayer nonsense. It doesn’t matter which way you spin it, ME3 singleplayer is going to suffer badly because of multiplayer, there simply isnt enough time/money to do both to an acceptable standard. ME3 is probably just going to be a copy of Halo. I hope i’m wrong but I’m not getting my hopes up.

All of these sites are playing damage control regarding coop mode. It was and is a horrible idea. Why bother? Why redirect resources? So in order to get a full ME3 experience players are FORCED to play OL multiplayer. Great idea.

Awful idea. So disappointed. I fully expect this game to suck OR get jipped because I don’t feel like doing some stupid coop online. Thanks Bioware. You’re great at taking a no lose idea and messing it up.
