Game Developers Pick Their Favorite Games Of All-Time
Though it’s probably impossible to gauge your all-time favorite game, you probably have some idea of what makes up your top five or your top ten favorite. But have you wondered what the developers of those games you love so much actually like to play themselves? Well, wonder no longer, because 1,000 of them have been polled on their top twenty favorite games of all time by the World Gaming Executives network.

So, what was the most-loved game among the people that make them for a living? It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that it’s Baldur’s Gate. The Baldur’s Gate series is comprised of some of the best (if not the best) RPGs ever made, so it’s little wonder that so many developers have a soft spot for BioWare’s best. While it isn’t shocking at all to see Baldur’s Gatetop the list, the rest of the developers’ top twenty might hold a few surprises. Take a look at the full list:
- Baldur’s Gate
- Diablo
- Curse of Monkey Island
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Mass Effect
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- StarCraft
- The Legend of Zelda
- EverQuest
- Devil May Cry
- Tomb Raider
- BioShock
- Metal Gear Solid
- World of Warcraft
- Deus Ex
- Super Mario
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Silent Hill
- Assassin’s Creed
- Dead Space
Some of those entries – such as Diablo, Curse of Monkey Island, Mass Effect, and Tomb Raider – likely refer to the entire series rather than just a single game. It’s difficult to tell which entries refer to a single game or an entire series, but this still gives you a good idea of what games developers prefer to play. The usual suspects are up there, but their order seems a little surprising. For instance, I was surprised to see Batman: Arkham Asylum and Devil May Cry so high on the list, outranking other titles like those in the Super Mario and Deus Ex series.
What about you? Were there any games on the list that you were surprised to see? Is Baldur’s Gate at the top of anyone else’s list? It’s near the top of mine, but I’m not sure if it takes the number one spot. In any case, head down to the comments section and give us your personal top five favorite games of all-time!
