Saints Row: The Third Requires Online Pass
Yeah, yeah, I know – no one reading this is surprised to hear that Saints Row: The Third requires online pass. Trust me, if anyone is sick of hearing about online pass, it’s me. It seems like half of everything I write these days has to do with online pass in some capacity, and every day I wake up expecting to see some news about online pass.

But, unfortunately for you dear reader, online pass is still news because online pass is still bullshit. Case in point: Saints Row: The Third will require online pass, even though THQ and Volition ditched Saints Row: The Third‘s competitive multiplayer mode a while ago. So, since there’s no competitive multiplayer in the game, what’s going to be locked?
As it turns out, Saints Row: The Third‘s online co-op for both the campaign and Whored mode will be locked until you enter the code that comes with your new copy or shell out the $10 for your used copy. So there, let it be known that we’ve entered the era where publishers will lock their games with online pass, even if it lacks a competitive multiplayer mode.
It happened with Batman: Arkham City, and now that it’s happening with Saints Row: The Third, it just shows that publishers are starting to push it so they can get that extra $10, regardless of the presence of a competitive multiplayer mode. In essence, it’s bullshit, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see entire games locked without that extra ten dollars within the next few years.
What do you think? Shocked to see that Saints Row: The Third is getting an online pass, or are you somehow left not surprised? Head down to the comments section to sound off, and keep it tuned right here for more Saints Row: The Third news as we approach its release date!

I share your frustration about having the viability of used sales undercut by Online Pass, but I think saying that a game is locked without an “extra” $10 is somewhat inaccurate.
As you indicate, the online code is included free with the new copy. The code only need be purchased when buying secondhand. If the price of a new, sealed game featuring online components was raised ten dollars over those without online features (a $70/$60 price-point comparison), I’d be more inclined to agree with labeling it an “extra” cost.
I don’t disagree that the whole thing stinks – doctrine of re-sale, et al. I do understand where the publishers are coming from, since used sales are cutting into their profits in an increasingly risky field, but this does often feel anti-consumer. I suspect the whole issue is gone in 3-4 years anyway though, as the delivery system shifts increasingly to digital download and cloud gaming.
I hate using online pass cause i usally rent games first but then i can’t check out online unless i feel like payin $10 but then i’ll eventually hav 2 return the game, wind up buying it, then wind up hav spent $70 when i shold’ve only spent $60 so then $10 bucks WASTED
