Republic Wireless Officially Launches, Brings The Promised $19 Per Month Price

Republic Wireless Service Now Available; Requires An LG Optimus Phone, Comes Priced As Promised At $19 Per Month & Relies Heavily On Wi-Fi Connectivity

We were first given the teaser from Republic Wireless earlier in the month, and well, coming just as promised they have officially launched today (November 8th) and those interested can sign up for the $19 per month plan.

That being said, the plan comes as an unlimited plan — offering unlimited voice, messaging and data for $19 per month. Of course, that does come with a catch and some limits. You see, the Republic Wireless plan relies heavily on the use of Wi-Fi. And in fact, there will be some restrictions for those who use more than an average amount of 3G.

But first, in terms of signing up, you will need to get a special phone, which at the present time is limited to just one — an LG Optimus with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and “Hybrid Calling.” The phone is priced at $199, however for a limited time that handset can be purchased for $99 by using welcome19 as a coupon code when checking out.

Moving past the handset and into the calling. As promised you have unlimited calling, messaging and data when using Wi-Fi for $19 per month. And nicely done, there will not be any overage charges or long-term agreements. As to the catch, that will come in when you venture off Wi-Fi and into 3G.

According to Republic, each user will have a cellular footprint, which is dubbed the Cellular Usage Index (CUI) and determined using your previous seven days of activity. In terms of the 3G usage, Republic Wireless breaks that down as follows;

“Even assuming 0% wifi usage, for example, you could consume 550 minutes, send 150 texts, and download 300 megabytes of data without crossing the community’s fair use threshold.”

Sure, the 300MB of data sounds low, but hey, you are only paying $19 per month. With that, those interested should also know that when off Wi-Fi and onto the cellular network, that will come by way of Sprint. In other words, if Sprint is not good in the area where you live, work or play then you may want to reconsider.

And lastly, that coupon code is set to expire on November 27th.
