Nokia N9 Updated to PR1.1, MeeGo Not Dead Yet

Nokia Pushes Out Nokia N9 Upgrade: NFC Tag Support, Swype Integration & Other Updates Available

While the Nokia Lumia 800 is the new flagship handset of the Finnish company, we won’t forget that the smartphone maker also has a tiny, but still worth noting, MeeGo arm represented by the Nokia N9, a device launched only a few months ago.

The phone has recently started selling in the USA, albeit not officially and for a $699 full price that isn’t very appealing. But in case you did purchase a Nokia N9 then you’ll be happy to hear Nokia is already issuing a software update that will include a bunch of perks and fixes:

  • NFC tag reading to instantly interact with NFC tags
  • Music controls on lock screen
  • Photo and video shooting with color filters: black & white, sepia, vivid, negative, solarize
  • More powerful multitasking with improved memory handling
  • Swype for fast typing
  • Faster MfE synch, synchronizing only active folders
  • Noice cancellation reduces background noise so that your friends hear you better
  • Close apps easily with swiping down, this now on by default
  • New indicators for standby screen like charging and calendar

The update, dubbed as PR1.1 (or software version number 20.2011.40-4) is going to be pushed out in waves, so don’t be surprised in case you haven’t received a notification to perform the update just yet.

The N9 is a definitely an interesting device. Not only does it have a completely new design for a Nokia smartphone, one that inspired the Nokia Lumia 800 as well, but it also packs some more than decent features under the hood: 3.9-inch AMOLED display with 854 x 480 resolution, 1GHz OMAP3630 processor, 16/64GB of storage, 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with auto-focus and HD video recording, GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD support, Dolby Digital and Dolby Headphone technology, and Meego under the hood.

In case you purchased the N9, let us know how the update works for you. In case you didn’t then what would you rather choose, the Lumia 800 or the N9?

Already have the nokia n9, best phone ever, I find myself trying to swipe other phones now. every other phone UI just feels dated now. Picked up a laser bluetooth keyboard, plug into the tv, surf the net or play games.

note, laser keyboard little tricky, doesn’t pair out of box, have to download and install package in devel-su mode. tsk tsk nokia, that should work out of the box!

they should port swipe UI to Lumia, windows phnone standard UI so ho hum, yawn.

I think qt will run on windows, Nokia need to port that to windows phone, so developers can write appps for symbian, meego and windows phones.
