iPhone 4S, iPad 2 & iPhone 4 Jailbreak Not Needed to Activate iOS 5 Panorama Camera Mode

iOS 5 Device Users Can Take Panoramic Photos Without Jalbreaking – Here’s How to Do It]

Yesterday we told you that iOS 5 contains a hidden panorama mode that would let iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users take panoramic pictures on their devices, but since the feature is not officially active yet, the user would have to jailbreak the device in order to activate it.

That’s certainly annoying especially for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users that would love to use the feature while on the go since these two devices are yet to be jailbroken, although the first steps in that direction have been already made. Other iOS 5 supported devices can be jailbroken with the existing tools out there but that doesn’t mean iDevice users should have to go through all that trouble in case all they want to do is to activate the new Firebreak feature.

Apparently there’s a hack for that, one that Apple will probably not appreciate, but one that works well, according to Funky Space Monkey. Here’s what you have to do:

1. Download iBackupBot from the official website. ( Mac and Windows ) [Ed: actual links available at the Source link below]
2. Plugin your iPhone and back it up via iTunes
3. Open iBackupBot and find the backup that you just made via iTunes. Select and load it.
4. Find Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist
5. Now you need to add a key to this .plist file. Open the file ( on mac, it just works *wink, wink* ) and near the bottom, add a key ( enableFirebreak ) and a string ( YES )
6. Save your modifications, and right from iBackupBot restore your iPhone with the modified iTunes backup
7. That’s it. Open your camera app, tap on options and there it is.

That’s definitely a neat trick, not that we’d advise you to modify in any way your iDevice software whether that means jailbreaking it or performing the magic described above. Sure, you’re entitled to do anything you want to the device, since you paid for it with your hard-earned money, but you’ll also be responsible for whatever happens to it.

With that in mind, are you taking panoramic pictures on your iDevice yet? Let us know in the comments section below!

It is pretty sweet. I wish it would stitch more frames together. It will do about a 90-100 degree panoramic shot. iOS does make it easy if you can’t keep the arrow on the centerline the entire time to crop it, to make it look nice. Here is a link to a sample… once it’s daytime I’ll make better pics…

Why would you mess with the integrity of your new iPhone if you have a dozen of panorama apps, out of which several are amazing. Try Pano, 360 Panorama, AutoStitch Panorama, etc. It’s worth a dollar or two, especially if you have to go throught the anguish of reseting your iPhone and voiding it’s warranty.

why do i get green photos after doing this?

Joe, put your training wheels back on, because I dont think your ready for the real world where computer users take control of their devices and start tinkering. Apple secretly included a feature in iOS and I am assuming they did not release it to the public because the project was either incomplete or abandoned. People who want to check out this unfinished app for fun or for actual use can do so.
FYI at this point it is extremely hard to put your iPhone in an irreversible state. Jailbreaking can be easily reversed with a quick and simple restore through itunes.
