iPhone 4S Preorders In Hong Kong Sell Out In Minutes
I think it’s safe to say we all knew the iPhone 4S was going to be a big deal. And in a variety of countries, there were brisk sales of the hotly popular devices. But one particular point just kicked up–remember how our own Robert Nelson detailed that the iPhone 4S was set to hit another 14 countries this Friday? Well, turns out that it’s possibly even more popular in one of those countries–Hong Kong–than anywhere else, judging by the rapidity with which the preorders went out the door.

Turns out the preorders took a meager ten minutes to go from “open and available” to “completely sold out” in the Hong Kong Apple Stores, and the rate didn’t seem too far off–though not quite that brisk–in the remaining countries. What’s more, word is that Apple Stores in the area are experiencing “daily stock-outs”, and are being advised to make appointments online to pick up the goods in question the next day, as stock is being refreshed daily, at last report. Further reports suggest that the popularity isn’t limited to Hong Kong, either, with SK Telecom and KT in South Korea reporting sufficient web traffic to crash their servers when preorders were opened.
This all doesn’t even factor in the fact that the iPhone 4S won’t land in mainland China until December, which is expected to be another big winner for Apple. And while the current word via our own Mariella Moon says that it’s Siri that’s been driving the iPhone 4S’ spectacular sales numbers, it’s worth noting that Siri speaks neither Mandarin nor Cantonese, the main two languages of Hong Kong and the surrounding area, and won’t until sometime in 2012, at last report.
So what’s driving the massive sales over there? Plenty of explanations exist–desire to get your foot in the door early and get the extras as they emerge and possible plans to resell the phones in the Chinese market a little ahead of schedule are just two–but if you’ve got a possible explanation, or just want to talk iPhone 4S, the comments section is ready and waiting below!
