iOS 5 Bug Found That May Yield Untethered Jailbreak

An iOS 5 Jailbreak May Be Forthcoming Thanks To Bug Recently Discovered By Chronic Dev Team Member pod2g

Pretty much ever since iOS 5 landed, the thoughts of much of the Apple community went toward jailbreaking the thing. And while many thought that such a feat would be difficult, if not impossible, due to the way it was set up. But with our own Chris Smith recently heralding a new semi-untethered jailbreak, it may well have been only a matter of time until a fully untethered version was brought to the fore. And thanks to the recent discovery of a new bug, a fully untethered jailbreak may finally make an appearance.

Chronic Dev Team’s own pod2g made the announcement via his Twitter feed that he had found a bug in iOS 5 that would, assuming everything worked out, lead to an eventual untethered jailbreaking. While he neither elaborated on just how long the exploitation of said bug would take, nor on the nature of the bug itself, speculation began running rampant that the bug was actually a so-called “userland exploit” similar to that which spawned the JailbreakMe 3.0 system. And JailbreakMe 3.0, in turn, led to fully one million jailbroken iPad 2 models in the first day following its release, according to reports. Such an exploit would in turn be available to all users, according to reports, once the full extent of it had been realized and exploited accordingly.

With several tethered jailbreaks for iOS 5 already out there, it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that a fully untethered version was under development. Though considering that iOS 5 only made its appearance October 12th, the fact that it took less than a month for several tethered jailbreaks to emerge as well as a hint of an untethered version to follow is surprising, if for no other reason than the sheer rapidity of it.

So what do you guys think here? Will we be seeing a full, untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 any time soon? Or do you think that pod2g is jumping the gun a bit with this announcement? However you feel about the possibility of an iOS 5 jailbreak, we want to hear from you down in the comments section below, so head on down and let’s talk iOS 5!
