Hollywood Decries Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Movie Demands

Assassin's Creed Movie May Stall Out Due To Ubisoft's Demands For Complete Control Over The Project

Earlier this year, it was reported that Ubisoft was meeting with US based movie studios to get the ball rolling on an Assassin’s Creed film. Since that report, Ubisoft has teamed up with Sony to make the project a reality, but now entertainment site Vulture is reporting that Ubisoft’s demands may cause the movie the stall out and never make it to the silver screen.

Apparently, Ubisoft has demanded a ridiculous amount control from Sony – in fact, anonymous Hollywood insiders told Vulture that Ubisoft demanded that it have complete control over almost every aspect of the film, including the right to pull the plug on the movie at any moment for any reason. One anonymous source told Vulture that no director – not even Steven Spielberg – would be able to secure such total control over one of their projects.

According to an unnamed talent scout, Ubisoft’s desire for complete control means that the movie will never be made, and that the deal between Sony and Ubisoft amounts to nothing more than “a waste of ink, paper, and time.”

Of course, there’s always more to the story than the controversy claims, and one source that is close to Sony and Ubisoft said that one of the reasons Ubisoft is being given so much creative control is because its putting a lot of its own money on the table, meaning that Sony only has to invest a fraction of what it normally would.

It sounds like Ubisoft is creating quite the controversy in Hollywood, but can you really blame the publisher? After all, Assassin’s Creed is one of the biggest game franchises ever, and given the fact that most video game adaptations turn out to be really shitty movies, I can understand why they’re being so protective.

What do you think? Should Ubisoft demand that kind of control over an Assassin’s Creed movie, or should they just back off and let Sony do its thing? Head down to the comments section to share your thoughts, and keep it tuned here to TFTS for more information on this apparently troubled Assassin’s Creed movie!
