VGA Game Of The Year Contenders Announced

Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Skyward Sword Among Game Of The Year Contenders At This Year's Video Game Awards

We just gave you a list of what games are being unveiled for the first time at this year’s Video Game Awards, but now onto a more important list: the list of Game of the Year contenders. Yes, Game of the Year is something every game strives to be, so head past the break to see which five games were honored with a nomination this year.

I have to admit that I’m a little bit surprised to see these five games alone as Game of the Year contenders, but go ahead and take a look:

See what I mean? There’s no Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3 up there, and I would’ve thought that two of the highest selling games this year (I know that Modern Warfare 3 isn’t even out yet, but come on, you know it will sell boat loads) would have a spot on the list.

That’s not to say that these games don’t deserve a spot on the list, not by any means. In fact, I’m happy to see such a diverse collection of games up on the list this year. It’s a shame that more games from earlier in the year didn’t make the cut though – Portal 2 is the only game that was released before October. Then again, I guess that’s what you get when 80% of the year’s major releases come out in between September and December.

What do you think of this collection of games? Are you surprised to see any particular game up there? Are there any games that you would have preferred to see on the list? Take to the comments below to share your thoughts on this list of Game of the Year contenders, and as always, keep it tuned right here to TFTS – we’ll have more information on the Video Game Awards as we approach its air date of December 10th!

My money is on the Elder Scrolls, but I have to admit the games on this list each have their own following for very obvious reasons. So, its anyone’s guess at this point of who truly deserves GOTY.

    2. Polimer says:

Skyrim should win… Doesn’t matter who else is on the list.

    3. ME says:

I bet there are going to be a lot of angry Dark Souls fans.

    4. Bob says:

      Skyrim for the win

    5. steven says:

I wasnt suprised that battlefield or modern warfare wasn’t on the list because generally most fps never win game of the year

    6. coon says:

      i like video games

    7. Ben Byrd says:

Skryim.. 6 years of development, and has a history of winning it, even with games that are somewhat underdeveloped.. Don’t see how it won’t take it again.

    8. Zephiet says:

I’m surprised the Dark Souls didn’t make the list… anyhow, I think it’s safe to say Skyrim is the winner, as Fallout and Oblivion both won GoTY, and Skyrim is by far the most epic and imense game on the list by any measure.

    9. Brad says:

Skyrim is my bet to win. Each Elders Scrolls game to be released grabs the GotY award somehow. Not complaining, love those games. I am a bit disappointed to see Dark Souls didn’t make the cut, but am very happy to see Arkham City.

    10. John says:

No one has a problem with preselecting games that have yet to even be released? If they are going to count skyward sword you may as well add mass effect 3.

    11. Ricki White says:

      SKyrim! Skyrim! Dovakhiin!

    12. Kamari says:

I’m surprised to see Portal on here but happy at the same time even though it won’t win GOTY. I think Skyrim will come out on top though simply because uncharted 3 is ps3 exclusive. Arkham city was a good game but I don’t think it will win it

    13. Watty says:

Don’t forget that Morrowind also won GOTY. With Oblivion, hat’s two ES installments in a row to win. Here’s to hoping that they’ll make it three in a row.

    14. justin says:

3 years of development bro. but yes skyrim should get it just because its the type of game that wont come for at least the next 3 years and it will be in stores shelves everywhere for at least the next 4 years unlike games like portal 2 or batman. es great games but skyrim is just the pinnacle for a lot of fans.

    15. lordbuzzkillington says:

theres really only three possibilities; skyrim, uncharted, and batman – skyrim is the frontrunner here from what i’ve seen but i wouldnt be surprised at all if either of the other two picks up the GOTY

    16. Jack says:

they started on skyrim when they finished with oblivion so its been at least 5 years.

    17. Anonymous says:

ME3 is for 2012 not this year silly goose

    18. Eric Abent says:

Actually, I believe they started on Skyrim once they finished Fallout 3.

It was conceptualized after the launch of Oblivion, but production didn’t actually begin until after Fallout 3 was released.

    19. Eric Abent says:

This list is voted on and determined by game bloggers and journalists. Most bloggers and journalists have already played all five games.

    20. Eric Abent says:

I think this is a pretty solid list all around, and even though I’m pretty sure that Skyrim will win, the Elder Scrolls have some pretty stiff competition this year.

    21. Eric Abent says:

I was only saying that because the VGAs are a very commercial production, so it seems strange that the most commercial games of the year didn’t make the list.

Glad to see that there aren’t any first-person shooters present on the list though!

    22. Eric Abent says:

Every game on that list deserves to win GOTY. It pleases me immensely to see great games get the recognition they deserve.

    23. Anonymous says:

He said development, not production… Todd Howard said 5 year development on Hotspot Podcast.

    24. vincent petersen says:

Ok there is only ONE game that will win and that ONE game will be “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” no other can make the cut and nostalgia isn’t a factor it innovation the rest of the games are great but they didn’t innovate batman arkham city plays a lot like yakuza with gliding and baterangs. uncharted is well uncharted. and sky rim even though they made things a lot better from its counter part its still deep down the same as the predecessor just better while skyward sword really innovated the franchise with its motion controlled combat and puzzle solving. i know that portal is great too and it does have motion controls (only on steam) well there isn’t anything that i can say about portal because there really isn’t anything like it.

    25. Rich says:

My money is on uncharted 3 for GOTY, all the other games are good contenders. I believe uncharted 3 will come out on top

    26. Chris says:

All Nintendo fans will be rooting for Skyward Sword (myself included), but all 5 games are amazing. Any game on that list could easily be argued as deserving of GOTY. It’s awesome to see so many great games get the recognition they deserve.

    27. Uncharted 3 will take it all says:

      Uncharted 3 enough said!!!!!!!

    28. pppp says:

      skyrim wins. [Ed: link removed]

    29. Callum says:

FPS games are usually mindless and boring, I do enjoy them but they bring the worst out in me and make me tired. RPG games and puzzle/adventure games are where it’s at for me.

I’m saying Skyrim should win it definately. With Portal 2 and Uncharted 3 being very close.

You could just say Skyrim isn’t even out yet, but from what I’ve seen and played (eurogamer expo) It’s going to be amazing.

    30. Someone says:

Where are all the Zelda fans? I’ve only seen one so far. It has a great chance of winning I’m sure. ZELDA ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

    31. Someone says:

      Zelda for me.
