Samsung Looks To Have Bada On Nearly One Fifth Of Its Phones By End Of 2012

Samsung's Upping The Stakes And Pulling Away From Android To Offer 17 Percent Of Its Phones With Bada

We haven’t heard a whole lot out of Bada lately, but while it may have been a while, the most recent talk around it suggested a way for Samsung to get out from under the constant lawsuit barrage it found itself in the midst of from the folks out at Apple. But now, we may be looking at the start of a much greater movement as Samsung drops word of plans to migrate Samsung devices away from Android…and on to Bada.

Samsung, through an executive, talked up plans to move fully 17 percent, or nearly one fifth, of all their devices to their proprietary Bada operating system by the end of 2012. Sharing the field will be Android at 66 percent, and the remaining 17 percent will go to Windows Phone. Basically, Samsung’s planning to do this to offer users more of a choice when it comes to figuring out what phone to have by adding greater differentiation within their product lines. With Android and Windows Phone growing in popularity, it does make sense for Samsung to get a dog in the hunt, so to speak, and Bada offers up a lot of interesting content in its own right, like Samsung Movies.

At least, that’s the response they gave when asked about it. But a second likely consequence of this will be to give them a little relief from the fire been taking from Apple of late, as well as giving Samsung an extra edge in the mobile phone market altogether by establishing themselves, much like Apple, as both a software and a hardware provider.

But considering what’s happened to other phone brands of late like Blackberry, is this a good time for Samsung to strike out on its own? Samsung has quite a bit more in the way of resources than Research in Motion did, thanks to their variety of consumer electronics (there’s no such thing as a Blackberry television, after all), and Samsung devices do have something of a broader footprint in the market, too.

So what do you guys think about this? Will Samsung’s migration to Bada carry on? Will it be well-received if it does? No matter what you think, head on down to the comments section and tell us about it!
