Modern Warfare 3 On Sale Via eBay Ahead of Release Date

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is going to hit stores in just a few days, and once it starts selling it’s expected to make $1.1 billion in the first six weeks. Therefore we shouldn’t be surprised to hear that some eBay buyers are willing to pay a lot of cash to get their hands on a MF3 copy well ahead of the official launch date.

How is that possible? Kmart accidentally started selling Modern Warfare 3 yesterday and some of the units that were sold made it to eBay almost instantly. These copies retail for around $60 and there are various auctions offering the game right now. But one of them has 88 bids and it’s currently selling at $1,725, well above what you’d expect to pay for a game, no matter how hot it may be.

What’s so special about this Modern Warfare 3 copy? Nothing actually. When inspecting the add you’ll get this simple description of the game:

A few days ago we told you that pirated copies of Modern Warfare 3 have already started circulating in the U.S. after an Activision employee stole a disk of the game. But the packages sold on eBay seem to be the real deal, so if you want to get your copy right now you can certainly bid in one of the opened auctions. Maybe not on the $1,725 one though.

But there is one thing to consider in case you want to play Modern Warfare 3 before it gets launched. Activision is not authorizing any game play. Stephen Toulouse, Xbox LIVE Director of Policy and Enforcement, tweeted the following:

“Playing early may impact your account!”
