Machinarium WiiWare Version Officially Canned

Machinarium Won't See WiiWare Release, Developer Cites Quality Concerns As Reason For Cancellation

We’ve been hearing a lot about all of the different ports of Aminita Design’s delightful little adventure game, Machinarium, but one version that’s been suspiciously absent from conversation is the planned WiiWare version. Unfortunately, we’ve found out the reason why Aminita hasn’t been talking about it all that much: the project has been canned.

It’s depressing news to hear, to say the least, and the pain of hearing it has been cancelled is compounded by the fact that the port was nearly finished. So, why cancel a project that’s so close to completion? According to Aminita Design boss Jakub Dvorský, Machinarium‘s WiiWare port was cancelled due to quality concerns:

The port is practically finished, but after some discussions, we decided not to release it because it’s just not good. The resolution is crap, and we had to squeeze the whole game (which is around 360 MB in [the] original version) into [the] 40 MB WiiWare limit. The music sounds terrible, the background pictures are heavily compressed, and we had to throw out… some animations.

A bummer for sure, but at least Amanita had the knowledge to pull the plug before they delivered a port that no one wanted to play. Machinarium is one of the best indie games to release in the past couple of years, and releasing a port that isn’t up to snuff would do nothing but hurt the title that Amanita has worked so hard to perfect.

At least the PSN version is still coming up, and even though it doesn’t appear to be launching until next year, it’ll apparently be worth the wait – Dvorský says that the PSN version will be the “ultimate version,” of Machinarium.

So, what do you think? Was anyone out there looking forward to the WiiWare version? Are you holding out for the PSN release? Hell, is there anyone left who hasn’t checked out Machinarium yet? Head down to the comments below to sound off, and keep it right here at TFTS – we’ll have all of the information you need on the upcoming PSN version of Machinarium!
