DC Universe Online Welcomes 120K New Players

New Players Flock To DC Universe Online After It Makes The Transition To Free-To-Play

DC Universe Online – that one MMO from Sony Online Entertainment about superheros and the villains that annoy them – went free-to-play earlier this week and, as expected, Sony Online Entertainment welcomed a flood of new players to its servers and its in-game stores.

Of course, there’s always going to be an influx of new players when a subscription-based MMO makes the switch to free-to-play, but Sony Online Entertainment has attracted a massive amount of new players to the game with the switch – SOE CEO Jack Smedley announced today that 120,000 new players have joined since the transition. He also said that concurrent users were up 400% since the shift.

Very impressive numbers, to be sure, but they don’t mean anything if Sony Online Entertainment can’t keep them around and get them to spend money. I’ve been hearing that there’s a fair few players out there that aren’t happy with the prices in the in-game store, and if these people don’t think the prices are fair, then they aren’t going to want to buy new items for their characters.

To tell you the truth, I had actually forgotten that DC Universe Online had gone free-to-play. I was looking forward to the transition but with all of the excitement surrounding this month’s major game releases, my anticipation for free-to-play DC Universe Online got pushed to the side. Now, however, I’m downloading it through Steam, so I’m looking forward to jumping into the world of DC Universe Online and creating my own superhero.

What’s your take – have you started playing DC Universe Online since its shift to free-to-play? If so, what do you think of it so far? Can you see yourself sticking with it for a while, or is it one of those games that won’t enter your regular circulation? Head down to the comments section and let us know what you think!
