Siri Gets Hacked Into Taking Customized Commands
We’ve all become somewhat familiar with Siri in the last few weeks since the iPhone 4S launch, and we’ve seen a lot come out of it. We’ve seen just what Siri can do, and how badly non-iPhone 4S users want Siri on their own system. But the information finding, story telling, joke cracking diva may find herself doing a lot more than expected thanks to word of a recent hack that puts a little more function in Siri’s systems.

Despite the fact that Siri can already do a whole lot of different things, as we’ve seen over the weeks so far with Siri, there are plenty of things Siri can’t do, like, say, go on Google Images and find you a picture of a dog. The commands are limited to Siri and Wolfram Alpha’s programming. But what a couple of enterprising hackers managed to pull off was a way to get Siri to accept custom commands.
As to the how of it, this is where things get really complex. Basically, according to reports, what the hackers in question managed to do was insert their own connection between Siri and the connection to Apple’s network, which allowed them to reroute Siri to connect where they pleased, to fetch or find or discover the things they wanted Siri to get. You can see one such screenshot above, in which Siri was used to connect to Hubot, a campfire app that does things like open doors or leave messages.
What this does, reportedly, is allow for Siri to have a whole lot broader range than she currently possesses. But the method involved in making that happen involves not only a jailbroken iPhone 4S, which is still a pretty fair ways off yet, but also a very specific set of methodologies that definitely are not ready for prime time just yet. Still though, once a simpler version is prepared, it’s going to open up Siri into an impressive piece of mechanics indeed.
So what do you guys think here? Will we soon be able to see Siri kick some serious data processing butt by opening her up to a much wider world beyond Apple’s servers? Or will Apple manage to finally stem the tide in terms of jailbreaking and leave this method inaccessible to all but the most dedicated? Either way, the comments section is waiting for you below, so head on down and tell us what you think!
