Dark Souls Has Shipped 1.5 Million Copies Worldwide
There’s no question that people like video games. This is, of course, common knowledge to anyone that lives in 2011 – I mean, we’ve got Activision and Electronic Arts reporting ridiculous numbers for their respective military shooters. That isn’t much of a surprise, however, considering that people like to both shoot things and compete with one another.

But apparently, a lot of people also like getting their asses handed to them over and over again. The proof? Japanese developer From Software is reporting that its latest game, Dark Souls, has shipped a total of 1.5 million copies since its release in September.
From Software’s Souls series is famous for being controller-throwing difficult, so why anyone would want to subject themselves to such torment is well beyond me. So how do these numbers break down by region? From Software says that the region with the most shipments is North America, coming in at 620,000 units shipped, followed by Europe at 470,000. Next up is Japan with a total of 370,000, and coming in last is Asia, with only 40,000 copies shipped.
So, even though these numbers for Dark Souls don’t come close to matching the world’s most popular FPS titles, 1.5 million units shipped is still pretty great, especially for a game where the extreme difficulty is considered one of the main draws. At the very least, this report probably means that we’ll see another Souls game sometime in the future, so fans have something to celebrate this evening.
What do you make of these numbers? Has From Software hit gold with their Souls series, despite the intense difficultly? Do you think we’ll be seeing Souls games for years to come, or will people lose interest in the series before long?
