Sega Not Planning On Using Classic Sonic In Future Games

Sega Doesn't Have Plans To Resurrect Classic Sonic, But Warns To 'Never Say Never'

We’re just two short days away from the release of Sonic Generations, and the anticipation is incredibly high. So high, in fact, that Sega recently announced that Sonic Generations has become the most pre-ordered Sonic game in history. Sure, that’s not saying a lot when held up against the most recent Sonic games, but this means that Sonic Generations beat out the most popular Sonic titles ever released.

This huge bump in popularity has to do with the fact that Sega’s choosing to include the shorter and pudgier classic Sonic the Hedgehog model in Sonic Genertations, complete with the side-scrolling levels that defined an era of gaming. Unfortunately, those ready and willing to see classic Sonic in future Sonic games might want to grab a box of tissues, because Sega says that it has no plans to resurrect classic Sonic after Sonic Generations.

Sega Europe brand manager David Corless explained the decision to Spong, saying that while there aren’t currently plans to bring back classic Sonic on regular basis, the success of Sonic Generations is ultimately what will decide the fate of classic Sonic:

Do you know what? There are no plans, to be brutally honest, to bring classic Sonic back. The reason for bringing him back for this game was because this is a celebration of 20 years of Sonic. It was a real fitting time to do it. He’s really well loved. Let’s see how Generations does. You can never say never in this industry, but at the moment there are no plans.

While I love some classic Sonic side-scrolling action, I’ve been hearing from those who have played the demo that modern Sonic’s stages are actually a lot of fun to play. If this proves to be the case for the whole game instead of just Green Hill Zone, then I’ll welcome more games starring modern Sonic. That main thing is that the games are fun – how Sega achieves that fun factor, be in through modern Sonic or classic Sonic, doesn’t really matter.
