Apple Might Be Developing 3D Maps

Apple's Activities Hints At 3D Map Development To Compete against Google Maps

Apple’s devices have been depending on Google for maps forever. But for quite a while now, Apple has apparently been looking to coming up with its own map for the iDevices, and has been acquiring smaller companies for years. Now with the acquisition of 3D mapping company C3 Technologies, Apple’s actions lend credence what’s been rumored all along — the company is working on 3D map app.

Apple has already acquired another 3D mapping company called Poly9 last year, and C3 merely solidifies reports of the unconfirmed Apple 3D map. C3 creates detailed 3D maps using a camera-based technique, and everything, even very small objects on the map are in 3D. The maps also have 360 degree views all around.

No official acknowledgement has come out of Cupertino, but I think that at this point in time, it’s safe to say that Apple is very interested in the 3D mapping field. We’ll just have to wait and see if anything comes out of it in the end.
