Top Halloween Apps for Tracking Ghosts, Spooking Friends or Just Plain Halloween Fun [What's Your Favorite Halloween Smartphone or Tablet App? We Share a Few Useful Apps for Trick or Treating, Partying & Turning Friends' Photos Into Ghosts]
Halloween is just around the corner. With kids dressed as ghosts and ghouls (and maybe even fairies, knights or angry birds), we adults have our fun with smartphone and tablet apps that can help spook the heck out of our friends.

What’s your favorite Halloween application? Erin Harris of the CW’s 33TV shares a few applications that are notable for being fun, scary and sometimes functional, too. For instance, there are apps that purportedly “track” the presence of ghosts, which can be creepy if you’re waiting for the subway alone in the middle of the night. There are also apps that turn photos into scary but funny versions with a overlays and tweaks. Here are a few:
- Zombie Booth on both Android and iOS turns any picture of a person into a 3-dimensional animated zombie. The animation can then be recorded and shared online for some freaky Halloween YouTube fun.
- HauntedFace for iOS turns any picture into a ghost. Said to be perfect for turning pets into monsters, this probably works well with improving a frienemy’s face and sharing online via Facebook.
- True Ghost Stories from Around the World is an iOS application through which users can read and share scary stories.
- Ghost Radar is a popular Android and iOS application that supposedly uses electromagnetic sensors, vibrations and sounds to detect paranormal activity. This might not be as effective as the Ghostbusters’ psycho-kinetic energy (PKE) meter, but it’s a low-cost alternative.
For the more serious Halloween enthusiast, Forbes‘ Andrew Bender and Mainstreet give a few more recommendations.
- Trick or Tracker is an Android app that lets parents sync their smartphones with their kids’ to track their trick-or-tricking movements around the neighborhood. Kids can track parents’ whereabouts, too, which can be useful when kids are trick-or-treating and parents are partying.
- An iPhone alternative is Find My Friends, which lets iOS users pinpoint their friends on a map, which can also be useful for keeping track of your kids if they’re trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.
- Carve It! is a good alternative to carving an actual pumpkin, and kids (and grownups) can draw designs on the pumpkin and light it up with an animated candle.
- Haunted House Finder shows a hundred haunted houses around the country as featured by the TV show Ghost Hunters. The app also locates the nearest haunted house based on your GPS location.
- Pocket Cocktails is an iOS app for adult Halloween party-goers, with over 500 Halloween-themed cocktails like the Eyeball Martini and the Ex-Ghoul Friend.
Do you have other Halloween app recommendations? Halloween can be a fun tradition, but it’s also a good idea to spice things up with a few gimmicks from our smartphones and tablets.
