Nintendo: Super Mario 3D Land 'Like A Hamburger', SMG 2 An 'Imperial Feast'

Super Mario 3D Land Director Compares Super Mario 3D Land To Super Mario Galaxy 2 In A Strange Way

Nintendo has always had a wacky way of doing things, so when Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Galaxy 2 director Koichi Hayashida starts comparing the games he led to different kinds of meals, I’m not all that surprised. Yeah, it’s a little strange to hear him call Super Mario 3D Land a hamburger and Super Mario Galaxy 2 an imperial feast, but like all things Nintendo, you just need to let him explain it before you start questioning his sanity.

Speaking with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata in a new episode of Iwata Asks, Hayashida compared the content found in Super Mario 3D Land to the content that was included in Super Mario Galaxy 2:

To me, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is like the Manchu Han Imperial Feast. It’s the kind of game that says, ‘There’s all this laid out before you, so eat whatever you want!’ To eat it all takes hours, so when you finish eating, your stomach is full. We put in everything that had built up since Super Mario Sunshine and made Super Mario Galaxy 2 to be a game that has everything.

This time, I wanted to make a compact game that, rather than the Manchu Han Imperial Feast, was lighter, like a hamburger you could just gobble down. I decided to start thinking from there.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that Super Mario 3D Land will be lacking when it comes to content. Hayashida says that they’ve actually ended up with about as much content as they had in Super Mario Galaxy 2, only that it takes less time to beat the challenges and stages in Super Mario 3D Land, making it the perfect companion for short game sessions.

That sounds great to me. Even though I’ve been mighty critical of Nintendo lately, I can never have enough Mario, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are seriously making me consider picking up a 3DS this holiday season. What do you think – are you looking forward to Super Mario 3D Land, or do the comparisons to hamburgers make you a little bit wary?
