LG Optimus 2X Denied Ice Cream Sandwich Future

LG Confirms It Will Not Update Optimus 2X to Android 4.0, Further Supports Android Fragmentation

The LG Optimus 2X, unveiled back at CES 2011, is the first dual-core smartphone in the world, although it only beat the competition by a few minutes as other devices with dual-core processors have been announced during the same event.

What’s important to note here is that the LG Optimus 2X is a pretty powerful device that should be able to serve its owners for some time to come. In other words one would expect that such a flagship device would be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it looks like LG has different plans in mind. The Android device maker has apparently confirmed that it will not bring ICS to Optimus 2S users. Here’s what LG responded on its Indian page when directly asked about it:

Life’s Good Dear Anant, We will not be introducing Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich updates on LG Optimus 2X P990. Keep watching this space for further updates.

That certainly is a very annoying answer, and while I don’t own an LG Optimus 2X, I can certainly sympathize with people that did purchase one and won’t be able to enjoy the new Android 4.0 features. That also reminds me, yet again, about the fragmentation issue that plagues the Android environment, one that Google simply can’t fight.

ICS will be launched officially in a few weeks, once the Galaxy Nexus becomes official, at which point we’ll find out more details about the Android tablets and smartphones that will be upgraded to the last Android version. Motorola, HTC and Samsung have already commented on their future ICS upgrade plans, and we know that at least some of this year’s flagship smartphones, including the Motorola Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid RAZR, Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Note will be upgraded to ICS.

Earlier today we told you that the LG Revolution will be upgraded to Gingerbread, and now we can’t but wonder whether an ICS update is also in the works.

Never again will I buy any LG phone, I feel completely ripped off with this Optimus 2x. It is unreliable, needs to be shut down before getting a wifi connection – absolute rubbish for the money spent. Apple here I come:

I own this phone. It has a great hardware. I just came across a video in youtube where an optimus 2x with 2.3.4 version is shown. But the kernel is still the old one. LG should grow up on its software development side. Give us ICS. If not give us the proper gingerbread. We deserve it.
