iPhone 4S Launches In 22 New Countries Today

Today Is Opening Day Of iPhone 4S Sales In A Variety Of Different Countries, Including Large Portions Of Europe

It’s kind of strange to think of the iPhone 4S as anything but a current model, but in 22 different countries, it’s only just come out on the market. A variety of places are getting their turnĀ  in the barrel today, and most of them seem centered in Europe.

The full list is clearly heavy on the European countries, representing the same countries that were in the second wave of preorders, and features Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. But there are other, non-European countries involved too; specifically, Mexico and Singapore. While it does make sense to see most of Europe come online at the same time, it does seem somewhat odd to see those two outliers, Mexico and Singapore, start up at the same time. Bringing all of Scandinavia online at the same time? Sure, absolutely. Most of those countries share borders with at least one of their number anyway. But to see Mexico and Singapore show up on this list is like adding in Uruguay and Vietnam–they’re just very much out of place.

But the good news here is that these phones will, reportedly, be available unlocked. And the prices are actually looking reasonably comparable, too, with carrier deals ringing in around 35 euros a month with one gig of data access (you can even share that gig with an iPad, and they’ll give you a free second SIM card to do just that), but the phones themselves are a bit pricey at 600 euros, or about $850 US, for the 16 gig model. Going up to the 64 gig model unlocked, meanwhile, will set you back an eye-watering $1133 US, or 800 euros. Meanwhile, in Canada, reportedly, you’re seeing those same phones go for $650 for the unlocked 16 gig and $850 for the 64.

I figure freight charges and VAT works in there for most of those countries, but still, it’s a pretty substantial difference. And in all honesty, I don’t expect it to really slow the sales any.

So what do you guys think here, especially you European readers? Are comparatively high prices stopping you from landing an iPhone 4S? Or are you really not sensitive to price as far as Apple’s new flagship phone goes? Either way, the comments section is waiting, so head on down and fill us in!
