C-Spire Rolling Out Gingerbread For The Samsung Galaxy S

Android 2.3 Gingerbread Now Available For Those With A C-Spire (Cellular South) Branded Samsung Galaxy S

Coming fresh off the topic of Android fragmentation, it looks like we have word of an update coming available. This time the good news has arrived for those sporting a Samsung Galaxy S with C-Spire (formerly Cellular South).

And nicely done, this update brings the handset up to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with directions for those looking to update from 2.1 Eclair as well as 2.2 Froyo. That being said, those with a Galaxy S looking to update should first check to see which version they are currently running. According to C-Spire;

  • Build number SCH-I500.DJ20 is Android 2.1 Eclair
  • Build number SCH-I500.EE25 is Android 2.2 Froyo

You can check by navigating to Menu -> Settings -> About phone. And the update directions can be found right here, directly with C-Spire. In short, either version you are currently running will require the use of a Windows PC as the update will come by way of the Kies software. As to the features that one can expect to see after the update is complete, those breakdown as follows;

  • Improved battery performance
  • Improved IMAP/POP3 email performance
  • Improved account and contact synch performance (like Facebook)
  • MMS (picture messaging) size increased from 512MB to 1GB

In addition, some of the other goodies that one will notice include an updated look for the menu bar, an updated notifications tray and quick buttons and an updated notifications bar.

Just to further detail this update — Gingerbread will arrive as Android 2.3.5 with software version SCH-I500.EI20. And lastly, as often the case with Android software updates — we suggest waiting and letting some others go first — you know, just in case things go wrong. But that being said, we are sure some will jump immediately and if you fall into that category — make sure you back up any and all important date before you begin.
