Pachter: Modern Warfare 3 Will Sell Twice As Much As Battlefield 3
With tomorrow’s launch of Battlefield 3, 2011′s war of the military shooter will begin, with the war will entering full swing when Modern Warfare 3 releases on November 8th. Honestly, no one is expecting Battlefield 3 to outsell Modern Warfare 3, but that isn’t stopping everyone’s favorite analyst, Michael Pachter, from feeding the fanboy flame war.

In a new interview with Forbes, Pachter predicted that Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3 two-to-one in 2011, pegging Battlefield 3 with a total of 8 million sales and giving Modern Warfare 3 a whopping 16 million sales. Those 16 million sales will happen in just under 2 months, so I’m getting the feeling that his predictions will end up being a little on the high end.
Then again, Modern Warfare 3 is the latest installment in the most popular FPS franchise around and is releasing just in time for the holiday shopping season, so 16 million sales might not be far off the mark. Moving into 2012, Pachter expects Modern Warfare 3 to sell another 8 million copies while Battlefield 3 will only bring home another 2 million sales.
Furthermore, Pachter doesn’t expect all that many people to buy both titles, saying that only “2 to 3 million will buy both.” That means that there’ll be some stiff competition and an unwavering sense of allegiance for most Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 players.
I don’t really know why Pachter feels the need to weigh in on this war between Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 – we all know that Modern Warfare 3 will sell more copies than Battlefield 3, and Pachter’s just throwing some arbitrary numbers into the mix. There may be a day a few years from now when the Battlefield series manages to outsell the Modern Warfare series, but that day is still quite a ways away and depends on gamers not growing tired of military shooters before it arrives.
What do you think? Do you think Modern Warfare 3 will end up on top, or will DICE experience an upset with Battlefield 3 and actually manage to unseat Activision and Modern Warfare? Does it even matter who wins this silly war? Head down to the comments section to sound off!
