New AMD Roadmap Suggests Ultrabook-Style Devices In Its Future [AMD's Roadmap Got A Surprise Outing, Shows Off Some Interesting Future Plans For Smaller Laptops]
Admittedly, AMD has always been something of a red-headed stepchild in the industry when put up alongside Intel, but there’s still some fight left in these guys. After all, at last report, they do have about 20 percent of the market, so it should only make sense to see they’re not giving up the ghost but rather carrying on, and the newest roadmap that’s emerged about these guys says they’re planning to play in a whole new sandbox.

The current word suggests that AMD has some plans for new processors geared toward ultrabook-style devices. In 2012, according to the roadmap, AMD will bring out its Deccan platform in what is expected to be June 2012, followed by its Kerala platform a year later. The Deccan platform is set to include both Krishna and Wichita APUs, while the Kerala platform will swing in with Kabini APUs. While that’s a big mouthful of strange names, the key point is that both Deccan and Kerala are said to offer up big improvements in terms of power consumption, which will let them get in on the ultrabook game too. Ultrabook processors need efficient processors, after all.
But it’s not just ultrabooks that AMD has plans for; they’ve also got the Comal and Kaveri series set up for laptops, and both the Samara and the Brazos T platforms set up for tablets.
It’s good to see that AMD’s still out to be in the fray as far as processors go, and definitely good to see they’re making their presence known in form factors beyond the desktop besides. Though the question will be if this variety of oddly-named processors will manage to have sufficient power and capability to stand up against their Intel counterparts, not to mention surpass them in some way to give them that always crucial marketing edge that will let them truly gain market share.
So what do you guys think? Does AMD have a chance with this new processor lineup? Or is it all just a hodgepodge of oddly-named hardware that won’t manage to keep up with the clear frontrunners at Intel? No matter what you think, the comments section is waiting for you below, so head on down and tell us what you think!
