Droid RAZR, Droid Bionic & Xoom Not to Get ICS Six Weeks After Galaxy Nexus Release Date [Misinterpreted Motorola Tweets May Drive Excitement to Unwanted Levels, Ice Cream Sandwich Update Coming Only Later]

Recently, we informed you that Motorola told the public via various means that the Droid RAZR (email), Droid Bionic (Facebook) and the Xoom (own forum) will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update so many of its customers will be waiting for.

In neither case did Motorola reveal an actual release date for the ICS update. In fact the company reached to us to inform us that the RAZR will be upgraded to ICS in the first half of 2012, with more details coming six weeks after the official launch of the Galaxy Nexus, the first ICS handset in the world.

With that in mind, I’ll tell Bionic and Xoom owners and future RAZR buyers that the ICS upgrade will NOT come six weeks after ICS becomes public as certain people interpreted one of Motorola’s recent tweets:

@technogasms DROID #RAZR, #BIONIC & #XOOM will get ICS. Within 6 weeks of Google’s public push, we’ll confirm other devices to get ICS.

The good news here is that Moto will confirm whether other devices will get ICS or not. Among the handsets that could receive ICS I imagine we’ll see the Droid X 2, the Droid X, the Droid 3, the Droid 2, the Atrix, the Atrix 2 and the Photon. Most of them are handsets launched this year, with the exception of the Droid X and the Droid 2, so common sense suggests they should get some Android 4.0 love.

Motorola then issued a second self-explanatory tweet that makes things even clearer:

@laarsnl We’ll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it.

Before you ask, the Galaxy Nexus doesn’t have an official release date yet, even though Samsung, Verizon and O2 confirmed the handset is coming at some point in November. Which is when Ice Cream Sandwich is also going to become official.

We’ll be following Moto’s updates closely so stick around for more Ice Cream Sandwich coverage, especially for the RAZR, Bionic and Xoom. In the mean time following our Twitter account, Facebook page or subscribing to our feed ensures you’ll get timely updates on all things Android-related.
