iPhone 4S Supports GLONASS
Prior to the unveiling of the iPhone 4S, it was suggested that the phone has “more definitive GPS features,” though what exactly that meant at that time, nobody knew for sure. Now, a Russian web site discovered that the iPhone 4S supports not only GPS but also the Russian navigation system GLONASS.

To explain: GPS is a navigation system that depends on American satellites. GLONASS, on the other hand, depends on Russian satellites, and was launched 35 years ago as an alternative to the GPS. Russia has been encouraging tech manufacturers to include GLONASS as an option in their devices, and Apple has clearly complied.

In fact, according to 9to4mac, the Russian government threatened not to import devices that don’t support the system. Other than Apple, Nokia is slated to introduce new handsets that support GLONASS, and Samsung already has an app called High Fidelity Position that supports the Russian navigation.
