Square Enix Talks Final Fantasy XIV On Xbox 360, PS Vita

Final Fantasy XIV Possibly Coming To Xbox 360 & PlayStation Vita After Update 2.0 Releases

Square Enix has a lot on their plate with the beleaguered Final Fantasy XIV. They’ve got update 2.0 ahead of them, which sounds like it’s going to completely overhaul the game, and in addition to that, they’ve got the PS3 version which they say will be out sometime next year.

But Square Enix apparently has aspirations beyond making the game playable and turning a profit with update 2.0 and bringing the title to PS3, because in an interview with RPG Site, Final Fantasy XIV producer/director Naoki Yoshida discussed the possibility of bringing the MMO to Xbox 360 and PlayStation Vita:

Of course, because the game is developed on the PC, moving it to the Xbox 360 platform wouldn’t be that difficult, but as we said before, the thing we have to get done first is getting that PS3 version done. Once that’s done, we can take the next step from there. We are continuing our talks with Microsoft, but then you think, maybe next year Microsoft might be announcing their next hardware, and so our decision is do we wait for that next hardware? So we’re going to wait and see what’s happening after we delivered what we’ve promised.

Yoshida says that a server overhaul is in the works with update 2.0, and after the servers have been opened up, they’ll be able to let people play from their PS Vitas and even their mobile phones. Of course, the full game won’t be available on mobile phones, with Yoshida suggesting that they may release a mobile phone app that allows users to check their inventory or raise their chocobo.

Those are some pretty lofty aspirations for a game that, so far, has been panned by critics and gamers alike. Square Enix has a lot of work to do before they’re ready to start work on an Xbox 360 or PlayStation Vita version, and with Square Enix saying that the rollout of update 2.0 will take around a year, it’ll be quite a while before we see either of those versions hit shelves.
