Rumor: PlayStation 4 Projects Already Underway At Sony
It’s strange really – as we approach the end of a console generation, we’re used to hearing rumors that the consoles of the next generation are in development, but we’re not used to hearing rumors about two next generation consoles in the same day, from the same source no less.

Develop is saying that, according to one of their trusted sources, games for the next PlayStation are already in development at several of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios. Of course, with the PlaySation 4 (or whatever it’s going to be called) still a ways off, these games are in very early development, but if these rumors are true, we could possibly see a PlayStation 4 announcement as early as next year.
That’s a big “if,” though, especially considering that Sony is going to be pushing the PlayStation Vita for at least the next year. Even if work has begun on PlayStation 4 games at some of Sony’s studios, an announcement next year probably isn’t going to happen – an announcement in 2013 and release in 2014 is much more likely.
You never know, though. Sony may want to get the jump on the next Xbox since the Xbox 360 made it out of the gate a full year before the PlayStation 3, and Sony has been sitting at third in total console sales since release. I doubt Sony wants to go through that again, so don’t be surprised if we see a PlayStation 4 release that seems a little premature.
Really though, speculating about the release of the next PlayStation is kind of pointless. It’ll be out when it’s out. I’m pretty sure that we’ll be hearing from the next PlayStation within the next couple of years at least, so there’s always that. What do you think? Do you think we’ll be seeing the next PlayStation before 2014? Is it possible that Sony will unveil the next PlayStation at E3 2012? Head down to the comments section to share your thoughts!
