PlayStation 3D Display Gets Release Date From Sony

Sony Reveals That The 3D PlayStation Display Will Hit Stores This November, In Plenty Of Time For Holiday Shopping

We’ve been following word of the 3D-capable PlayStation Display since it first got shown off back at E3 last June, and while we’ve been waiting for an actual worldwide release date to hit–and we did get one for the Japanese market–a recent blog post out at Sony has revealed the truth of the PlayStation Display’s release date.

The PlayStation Display is set to hit stores November 13th, or just two days after Skyrim lands (and yes, I do have my preorder already in hand), and well after the original projected Japanese release date (which doesn’t seem to have been altered for our Japanese readers) of November 2nd.

The PlayStation Display is a 24 inch display showing at 1920 x 1080 resolution, and offers up two three watt speakers, two HDMI inputs, and a 5000 : 1 contrast ratio. You’ll be able to use this as a regular television for your other media when you’re not playing games, and there’s a special feature in here for gamers that will allow you to play a head to head match against someone else (as long as they’re in the room with you), on the same display and both of you will get the full screen. It’s called SimulView, and it lets you use 3D display technology to see two different images, one for your player and the other for the second player.

You’ll have to shell out $499.99 for one of these, but you’ll get not only the display, a pair of glasses, an HDMI cable and a copy of MotorStorm: Apocalypse. If you preordered before October 1st, you’ll reportedly get a copy of Resistance 3.

Personally, I don’t see this one doing so well. Sure, a 3D display that will let you play two player games on your whole screen is a good buy, but at $500, you can get a television nearly twice that size if you shop around. The question will really have to be one of just how valuable 3D is for you.

So what do you guys think here? Think the PlayStation Display will be gracing your home theater system? Or would you pass up 3D capability to get a bigger display? Either way, we want to hear from you, so hit the comments section and tell us what you think!

I think that is the most kick ass thing I’ve ever heard as far as gaming goes…that price is a little steep though.

    2. Marc says:

I really want one. I usually hate 3D but this is appealing for the split screen thing but the price is REALLY high. I got a 52″ LCD HD 1080p tv for that much :/

    3. DLB313 says:

I work at Gamestop and I was the first person to reserve this display. A month after reserving I cancelled as I was playing SOCOM 4 on my Vizio 42″ HD set, I looked at my 23″ CPU display and reasoned that this PS3 3D display should at least be a 32-38″ display for the pricetag of $500. I bought a 32″ RCA 720p set at $390 at Sears 4 months ago now. For $500 this PS3 display should look like the apple thunderbolt display and have the PS3 system built into the display. A PS3 bundled witb Infamous 2 is $400.

    4. That’s about what I thought. Why drop $500 on a 23 inch 3D set when you can get double that size (without the 3D, admittedly, but still) in some cases? Especially with the Black Friday shopping season coming up!

    5. Especially steep for the specs you’re getting.

    6. You may want to just wait a bit then, Marc–word is that LG’s looking to do something similar on its televisions.
