Siri Looks To Arrive On All iOS 5 Devices Without Need For Jailbreaking

Another iPhone Developer Looks To Port Siri To Variety Of Apple Devices Running iOS 5 Via Undetermined Hack

It’s becoming more and more apparent with each passing day that one of the biggest draws, easily, for the iPhone 4S is Siri, the voice-activated assistant software that lets you do most everything from schedule appointments to dictate emails. But many people with iPod Touches and iPads were starting to wonder if they’d be left out in the cold on this one. But for one developer (joining others making the attempt as previously reported by our own Chris Smith, that doesn’t seem to be the case much longer, as he’s working on a way to get Siri onto most any device running iOS 5.

A developer going by the name of Jackoplane has announced that he’s managed to port Siri to other devices, basically, any iOS 5 device from an iPad 2 down to an iPod Touch 3G. Just how he’s done it, or when he plans to release it, is as yet unclear, but the word is that he’s to the point now where the “hardest part” is yet to come, likely distribution. The interesting part here is that Jackoplane purports to have Siri communicating with Apple servers from these other devices without incident.

This has sparked a lot of interest–two of the top questions asked of Jackoplane following the announcement were “do you need testers?” and “when will I be able to use it?”–among people who didn’t have an iPhone 4S but still wanted to get in on that sweet Siri action for themselves. In all likelihood, now that Apple’s probably heard about this by now, they’ll likely take steps to ensure that only iPhone 4S units will be able to make the communications necessary to use it, but still, there’s some hope for you out there who have Apple gear and want Siri on it where it isn’t currently.

Personally, I look for Apple to shut down any unauthorized access in rapid fashion as Siri is going to be a pretty substantial draw to stuff like the iPad 3 when it comes out, so they’ll want it limited to as few devices (and the newest devices) as possible. Plus there’s likely to be some processor issues when you start getting down into the iPod Touch range.

But what do you guys think here? Would you take a run at Jackoplane’s hack to get your device of choice access to Siri? Or do you think Jackoplane’s overstating his capabilities? No matter what your opinion about all this, we welcome it down in the comments section below.

Great news… I actually do not want to jailbreak my iphone 4…

But I think Siri is worth it… Anyway… Good news… Hope to hear more soon…

wowwww…… I love it to be running in my old lazy iphone 2G

    3. Teja Peela says:

Did you know that Siri was an app in the appstore before apple tore it down to release it in the 4s? Obviously all iOS devices would have been able to run it.

    4. Chris Smith says:

You’re saying that Siri app is exactly similar to the iPhone 4S Siri app. Which is probably not the case. But yes, more iOS devices should be able to run this one.

    5. GW says:

I’ve seen the attempts to get it on other iOS devices. No thanks.

    6. DL says:

I hope Apple shuts down access for those that port Siri on non 4S iPhones. iPhone 4S users, myself included, had been troubled with network problems on Siri as so many people used it at once. Once it gets ported, those problems will come once again and nobody will be able to use Siri…. Bottom line, don’t ruin Siri for those that paid the premium for the 4S device, and go buy the 4S if you plan on using Siri….

    7. Chris Smith says:

What about those people that paid “the premium” for the iPhone 4 last year? Or the similar “premiums” for the iPad or iPad 2? What’s premium when it comes to Apple devices? What will happen 40 million iPhone 4S purchases later?

I’m not debating your argument that Apple’s servers are to blame, they will have to deal with them. But it sounds strange and silly to hear you say that iPhone 4S owners should be treated differently because they purchased the latest device IF existing devices could run Siri.

    8. buns says:

you WILL need to jailbreak your device, if you read jackoplane’s twitter it says so there.
