Samsung Galaxy Nexus Specifically Designed To Avoid Apple's Patents, Says JK Shin
We’ve been following the Apple / Samsung patent battles for some time now, and there definitely have been a lot of them. But now, Samsung’s JK Shin, head of the mobile division, has come out saying that the Galaxy Nexus was specifically designed to avoid as many patents as possible, putting an interesting twist on a case that’s been jammed full of them so far.

The current reports say that Shin, in commentary with Yonhap News, said that the Galaxy Nexus had been built specifically with Apple patents–and the avoiding of same–in mind, eschewing things like TouchWiz and the home button. One quote that emerged from Shin went like this:
“Now we will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously.”
Some have wondered if this statement may not come back to haunt Samsung, especially given how hard Apple’s been fighting its patent suits; saying that you will now avoid everything makes more than a few people question what you did previously, after all. And, as a further interesting note, Shin isn’t even quite sure that the resulting patent suits will stop with the Galaxy Nexus and its careful attention to avoiding patent suits, saying that they would essentially have to wait and see if the new phone could stay out of legal drama. This only makes sense due to the highly complex nature of intellectual property, and it’s surprisingly easy to find yourself on the wrong end of such an affair through no intention of your own.
Indeed, the features and design are dramatically different from previous Samsung versions, even including a curved screen of unusual dimensions. And we will have to wait and see if anyone goes after Samsung over this one, though the phone does seem significantly different, hopefully sufficiently so to fend off the legal battles.
What do you guys think of all this? Was it a bad idea for Shin to say that they’re now planning to be careful about patents? Do you think the Galaxy Nexus will find itself in patent issues? Either way, we want to hear from you, so hit the comments section and tell us what you think!

I think it’s not so much that they didn’t care about the patents before, they just weren’t going out of their way to avoid every single one. Since Apple has been so touchy lately, they may still try to prevent sales in certain areas, or say patent infringement. Maybe I’m just a Google fanboy though, I’m not really sure. I don’t think we’ll be seeing as many issues with this phone as compared to the Galaxy Tab and other such devices.
Good call, KcK. It’s just one of those things that makes you scratch your head, you know? A “Well, if that’s what you’re doing now, what were you doing THEN?”, kind of thing, which is very not helpful when your lawyers are in court right now saying “We never!”, if you follow.
I don’t think it means anything more than a good gesture. Samsung has had enough of Apple. Samsung makes it look like they’re giving Apple an inch, so when Apple take a yard back Sam can have more reasons to fight back hard.
