HTC Releases Statement Concerning Ice Cream Sandwich Updates

HTC Not Making Any Android 4.0 ICS Promises, But Wants To Upgrade As Many Of Their "Recent Devices" As Possible

Google officially unveiled Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich last evening and with that announcement came word of all the exciting new features. Of course, that brings us to the next logical step — trying to figure out which of the current Android handsets will get an update and which will not.

And as we saw, the Galaxy Nexus will launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich already in place. Otherwise, some of the big features that will be included are an improved Gmail and Google Calendar experience as well as the nifty sounding facial recognition unlock.

Anyway, before we move super far off the track and into the complete feature list of Android 4.0, lets shift back to whether or not current handsets will get the pleasure of an upgrade. So far there is still plenty of question on this, however HTC has come forward with a statement laying out their intentions.

We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone’s unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel. While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone’s performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans.

Sadly, this probably does not offer quite as much detail as many HTC users are hoping for. But that being said, it is something and if nothing else, it seems like a good first step in the process. Of course, as we are still seeing handsets only now getting an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, not to mention a few still being released with Android 2.2 Froyo — we are going to keep our excitement in check until a more detailed list comes.
