EVE Online Developer CCP Games Announces Job Cuts
People have not been happy with CCP Games lately. It isn’t as if they did anything terribly wrong, but in order to understand the troubles that CCP Games faces, you need to understand the serious EVE Online players. EVE Online players take their game very seriously, and there’s a sense of pride found in the fact that EVE Online isn’t like other MMOs out there.

CCP has been making changes to the game over the past few months, and those changes haven’t been received very well by EVE Online players. Today, CCP announced that they would be cutting 20% of their workforce, likely because some of those decisions have been costing them some subscribers lately. In a statement posted to CCP’s website, they explained that the game that will be affected most is World of Darkness, with the studio choosing to focus mostly on EVE and it’s console spin-off Dust 514:
We have come to the conclusion that we are attempting too many things for a company our size. Developing Eve expansions, DUST 514 and World of Darkness has stretched our resources too thin. Rather than allowing this to persist, we have made the decision to sharpen our focus. Sadly, this means reducing our staff.
Make no mistake, though – even though World of Darkness is the game that will suffer the most from CCP’s cutbacks, it isn’t being cancelled. As for EVE Online, CCP said that it’s in good health, but that they’ve made their share of mistakes with the title in recent months:
Our subscriber numbers are higher today than they were a year ago. Unlike many other MMO’s on the market, we have continued to grow year-on-year since launch in 2003. However, over the past two months, our subscribers have gone down from their peak this summer. We attribute this to our own mistakes and poor communications with our players. We are correcting that now.
What’s your take? Do you think CCP can get EVE Online back on track? Is World of Darkness pretty much dead even though it hasn’t been officially cancelled? Take to the comments section below to sound off on this latest news from CCP!
