Asus Eee Pad Transformers To Get Ice Cream Sandwich, May Prove First To Do So
About the only tablet out there that’s proven a consistent challenger to the 800 pound gorilla in the room that is Apple’s iPad 2 is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. A tablet backed up with a built-in keyboard and several other interesting features, the Eee Pad Transformer has kept itself in play with its feature set and relatively inexpensive price tag. Now, word is that it’ll get one more surprise: the honor of being the first tablet to get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade.

This isn’t the first time that Asus has been quick out of the gate when it comes to upgrading its tablet operating systems. The release of Honeycomb saw Asus very quick to get it on the tablets as well, so it’s no surprise to hear that Asus has plans to follow suit with its next update. As for timing, Andy Rubin out at Google was previously heard to remark that the Ice Cream Sandwich updates would follow closely after the release of the Galaxy Nexus, which itself is still looking at a November release, at last report. So if everything goes according to plan, the Asus Eee Pad Transformers would start seeing their updates roll out sometime in December. What’s more, Asus went on to say that the Eee Pad Transformer 2, which we heard about not so long ago, would also land the Ice Cream Sandwich update as soon as both were available.
The comments section for our last article on the Eee Pad Transformer 2 raised some good points about the device having Ice Cream Sandwich, and if it did, the resulting device would be sufficiently powerful to effectively tackle the iPad line. That may not be everyone’s belief, but certainly, if Asus did manage to improve its already popular tablet with a shot of the impressive features that Ice Cream Sandwich has in the offing, then Apple may have a whole new treat to watch out for, especially if it still offers the Kal-El chip. Below is a teaser video said to be of the Transformer 2.
But what do you guys think? Anyone else want to weigh in on an Ice Cream Sandwich packing Eee Pad Transformer or Transformer 2 from Asus? Or do you think that Apple’s got the top slot in the market and will keep it, especially when the iPad 3 makes its inevitable debut? Either way, we want to hear from you, so head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!

ASUS has done a commendable job at taking the tablet further than the iPad has done by incorporating the keyboard as a feature along with expandability and customization options galore. With the new ePad ASUS now nails the thin form factor driven by a powerful quad4 processor which should place ASUS squarely in the minds of anyone seriously looking for a useful and functional tablet PC. In that regard the ipad is left looking more like an gadget to amuse rather than a serious tablet computer.
Innovation, marketing, price, timing and a solid device are just some of the keys to success in this market. Apple is and will continue to be the market leader for some time. But ASUS is showing that innovative ideas that are executed well can draw consumers.
You’re both quite right on this one. Asus has really done a major job keeping up with Apple. The Transformer 2 may pose a serious threat.
I bought a Transformer in August this year after much deliberation rather than the `safe` iPad 2 bet. The keyboard and additional 7 hours battery that brings swung it for me. I have not looked back and wouldn`t swap for an iPad. The flexibility for device customisation, widgets, flash site support etc. make it a clear winner for me. I love the Asus and they provide firmware updates very quickly after release. Now i have to decide if to upgrade to a Prime!
