Droid RAZR vs iPhone 4S: Apple’s Device Prominently Featured During Motorola Event

The Motorola mobile event has just ended and we couldn’t help but notice that the iPhone 4S was prominently featured by Sanjay Jha and Co. during the presentation of the new Droid RAZR. But other LTE devices have also been shown during the keynote in order to prove the RAZR is a better choice.

iPhone 4S – The Main RAZR Rival

Motorola started the comparison between the two devices by highlighting the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display of the RAZR compared to the smaller 3.5-inch Retina Display of the iPhone 4S. Yes, the display is bigger, that’s something pretty obvious when comparing 4.3-inch with 3.5-inch screens. The RAZR is not the first smartphone in the world to offer a 4.3-inch display.

Later during the event, the company compared the loading times of various sites on the Droid RAZR and on the iPhone 4S in order to prove that the 4G LTE connectivity is far better than the iPhone 4S’ 3G connectivity. But an actual comparison was never provided. Instead Motorola only displayed page loading times.

The Droid RAZR has been described as a device “that’s thinner than 3G smartphones and delivers full 4G LTE speeds.” Of course, the RAZR, alongside all other 4G LTE devices, can offer a faster data connection than any 3G handset, including any of the available iPhones. But Motorola never said what happens if Verizon’s 4G LTE network is not available in a region. That’s right, the iPhone 4S is either as fast as the RAZR (if running on a CDMA network) or faster (if running on AT&T).

iCloud vs Personal cloud

Also worth noting is that Motorola, a company that Google is ready to pay $12.5 billion for, seemed interested to distance itself of cloud services and cloud computing during the event. The company did not mention the iPhone 4S in this instance and its iCloud capabilities as Motorola clearly can’t compete with Apple’s iOS and OS X cloud solution yet.

Jha said that only 15% of people store content in the cloud with everyone else relying on the use of PC. Motorola introduced MotoCast, a DropBox-like service, that can be installed on any computer straight from the smartphone in order to share files. Instead of offering an actual cloud stored on remote servers, Motorola is offering a “personal cloud” solution, which involves a direct connection between the RAZR and computers. That’s one way of dealing with the lack of an actual iCloud rival.

It will be interesting to see whether Motorola’s position regarding the cloud will change once the Google proposed purchase gets approved by regulatory commissions. After all, Google has devised an entire desktop operating system, Chrome OS that relies heavily on an actual cloud.

Finally, Motorola used iTunes on a PC to demo the music playing capabilities of the RAZR as part of the “personal cloud.

4G LTE Smartphones – Battery Life

Motorola has decided to clearly take a few hits at the iPhone 4S a day after Apple announced it sold over 4 million units during the launch weekend. But the company also took hits at some of its Android competitors, Samsung and HTC when comparing battery life. The RAZR’s battery life that offers 12.5 hours of talk time and 8.9 hours of video playback is supposed to be better than the HTC Thunderbolt’s and Samsung Droid Charge’s battery performances. But Motorola didn’t tell us anything about LTE usage and battery life, which is what we really want to know. Otherwise there’s really no point in comparing battery life on various 4G LTE devices. And what about the LG Revolution and the Motorola Droid Bionic? Why were they left out of the battery life comparison?
