Samsung Galaxy S & Galaxy S II Reach Combined Milestone
Amid all the flurry of news we’ve heard out of the iPhone 4S, especially its big weekend sales numbers, Samsung decided it wasn’t going to be left out and took the opportunity to put up its own admittedly less impressive sales numbers. The Samsung Galaxy line, comprised currently of the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S II, has reached a combined total of 30 million units sold.

Two thirds of that number was, reportedly, the Galaxy S, while the remaining third was its newest model. Samsung cites its relative popularity in Europe as one of its biggest reasons for the sales numbers, as well as its second place ranking in the entire smartphone market in the spring of this year, though they didn’t mention the elephant in the room that Apple was still well ahead of them.
Like I said, the news is not so impressive when you consider the combination of factors that 1. the Samsung Galaxy S has been available since 2010 and 2. the iPhone 4S sold almost a seventh of that number in one weekend. But objectively speaking, selling 30 million of anything is no mean feat. Indeed, this represents something of a turnaround in general for the folks out at Samsung, who previously saw their smartphones–largely Symbian devices with a little Windows Phone thrown in for good measure–relegated to strictly “niche” status, but now since their move to Android has seen them become downright mainstream. And, of course, the Galaxy S II only really just got started back in September, so with the prime shopping season that is the end of the year steadily advancing on us, they may manage to put a little extra punch in those numbers above and beyond what we’ve already seen thus far.
So what do you guys think about all this? Can Samsung’s smartphone line advance and become a serious competitor with Apple? Or will they join the horde of other cell phone makers locked in a duel for second place? No matter how you feel about it, we love hearing from you, so head on down to the comments section and fill us in!
