iPhone 4S Having Screen Quality Issues, Say Some Buyers

Reports Emerge That Suggest The iPhone 4S May Be Having Some Display Related Problems On Some Units

A strange new complaint has arisen in some quarters regarding screen display issues with the iPhone 4S. Apparently, the iPhone 4S is having a bit of trouble with the color yellow (leading some to refer to the display problem as “Yellowgate”, in reference to the iPhone 4 antenna problem known as Antennagate), though that’s not the entire problem, only part of the situation.

Some iPhone 4S users are taking to the Apple support forums to report that the iPhone 4S gets a kind of yellowish tint to its display, and the problem actually becomes quite a bit more obvious when you put it up alongside an iPhone 4. But also weighing in are reports of poor contrast, or washed-out colors, sometimes both at once.

Similar problems actually dogged the iPhone 4 for a while during its original release, according to reports, and in that case it was traced back to a yellow adhesive that showed up because the phones were being shipped almost as fast as they could be assembled in a bid to meet demand. Under normal circumstances, the adhesive in question would dry up following a few days out in the open air, and a normal phone would be left behind. But the adhesive would be seen for a while simply because the phone was just plain old too new for the adhesive to dry and vanish. Thus, some are wondering if this is just a reappearance of an old problem that may well correct itself after the iPhones have had a few days to be anywhere but a factory or a cargo vessel.

However, an explanation of color intensity problems is somewhat more elusive. Apple, for its part, hasn’t responded to this yet, likely because they’re only just finding out about it themselves. Below is a screenshot taken by one Apple forum user illustrating the difference.

But what about you guys? Any of you finding that the display on your iPhone 4S isn’t putting out the kind of colors you’d like…or maybe some that weren’t supposed to be there in the first place? No matter what the case is, we definitely want to hear from you, so head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!

I have this exact same problem. I put both my iPhone 4 (CDMA) next to my new 4S, and the 4S display quality was not as vivid as the 4. The app icons did not have the same vivid contrast. They looked duller. The blue title bar in the settings menu looks more gray, and there is almost a “fuzz” that makes the display just seem not as perfect as the 4.

I contacted Verizon, and they’re sending me a new 4S by 10/28. I will not settle for the poor image quality when my 4 looked amazing. It’s a real disappointment – I’m hoping it was just a production snafu (maybe a rush job).

Apple, please improve your Quality Control process!

Experience the precise problem captured in the photo in the article. I compared it with my neighbors 4 after he alerted me to the potential issue and it was clearly an issue. What to do? Wait a week to see if problem corrects itself and if not schlep down to the Apple store and wait in line again? Greeaaaat!

Mt wife and I got the iPhone 4s white and black. and mine (the black one) is ye;lower. just like the picture illustrated. I personally don’t like it. my eye hates the tint. I’m a photographer and i see a big difference. the picture just don’t look as they are supposed to look.

I also have this problem. If the yellow doesn’t go away in a few days, I’m returning my 4S and going back to my 4. As much as I love Siri, I can’t stand for losing quality with an “upgrade.” BTW, I’ve noticed my 4S has a noticably shorter battery life. If that’s the cost of a dual core processor, then you, sir, can hang on to that additional core.

I had iPhone 4s on launch day from Apple Store Online, took it to Apple Retail Store and compared mine with their demos, mine had a distinct yellow cast and was lacking resolution, The sales staff agreed but said return it to the Online Store. What a hassle.?

i guess im one of the lucky ones then. both my iphone 4 and 4s never had issues with the yellow tint or somewhat worse battery life on the 4s. both are first release phones which everyone should know always has the few little bugs to them at the start. but with battery life be happy that its not like an android phone. my incredible would have 30% battery at the end of the day (with wifi and everything else turned on) compared to the 4s which has about 85%

    7. Thanks for all the responses, guys! Frankly, I’m amazed to see so many people having the exact same problem, especially from Apple hardware. I’ve often believed their stuff was overpriced, but usually made it up in terms of product quality and function. Hearing about things like this definitely doesn’t help them.

My wife and I both had the iPhone 4. She cracked the screen and had it replaced, but the new screen was yellow like everyone else has been experiencing. She decided to upgrade her phone to the new iPhone 4s thinking she would get the vivid colors back. The new iPhone 4s screen has a yellow tint just like the replacement screen. They are nothing like the vivid color that our original iPhone 4 had.

My 4s showed up and top half of the screen would not respond to touch and in some instances before my finger touched the screen it activated a nearby icon. Waiting on a new one hopefully monday. ( with a full price hold on creditcard plus shipping)

This is ridiculous this company has put out two defective phones in a row, while I think the 5 might be good I will not purchase it,they need to earn trust back from customers,no antenna(put a rubber band on it)…WHAT!,no battery(WE ARE LOOKING INTO IT FOR A MONTH NOW),bad displays, slow data speeds,FIVE YEAR OLD SYSTEM, wow, how much will ifans forgive this company, there are better systems out there

    11. Pat says:

I have 2 of the iphone 4′s and love every thing about them. I just got the 4S and as well, mine has a yellow cast to the screen. Sort of a slight yellow-ish color shift, and at certain angles, its more pronounced. The 4S screen dosent look as well as the ph 4′s screen.

It would be nice if Apple could fix this. They have a great phone and because you have to spend a lot to get one, (I have the 64MB), Apple should fix the screen problems for free of charge on the 4S’s affected and any phone that has a replaced screen, if that too is showing a yellow cast.

Maybe Apple used a different company for the screens.-that could account for the color shift.
