iPhone 4S Found To Be Louder Than iPhone 4
For those of you out there who got a bit of a shock this morning if you use your new iPhone 4S as an alarm clock, this particular bit of news may not be quite that new. But for those of you not already aware, there have been some head to head comparisons made recently that revealed an interesting discovery: the iPhone 4S is actually a lot louder than its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

The comparisons say that the iPhone 4S is actually about six decibels louder than the iPhone 4, which doesn’t sound like all that much until you consider that five decibels, reportedly, is all that removes normal conversation from one foot away from a small orchestra, and ten decibels separates a dishwasher from city traffic.
There’s even a comparison video that hit YouTube (we’ve got it down below in case you don’t want to go hunting around YouTube for it) that shows, in a very scientific comparison fashion (even down to four stickers to guarantee that the iPhones in question are correctly oriented for comparison, that indeed, the iPhone 4S is quite a bit louder than the iPhone 4 was. Basically, they just ran the same video on both phones and kept a sound meter near to hand to measure the decibel levels put out and found that six decibel variance.
As to the why of it all, some suggest that this is a concession added for the sake of the Siri system, which will depend on voice messages both as input and as output, though it could just be for the sake of music and video. After all, we know that Apple’s getting a whole lot more into streaming media, so more robust speakers likely wouldn’t hurt. Though the Siri argument is just as compelling.
So what do you guys think? Anyone get a bit of a surprise to kick off their morning when they discovered their iPhone 4S alarm was a lot louder than their iPhone 4 model? Or did you not really notice a difference? Either way, head on down to the comments section and let us know what happened with you!

Yes I actually use my phone as my alarm and today it was shocking to wake up to the loudness. My alarm even fades up taking a minute to hit full volume and it was jolting. I think it is great thou because I have occasionally slept for 20 minutes into the alarm.
Thanks Apple :)
Six decibels, man. A pretty big difference indeed.
I can finally enjoy music while showering using my iPhone 4S!
…now that is a good point. Normally to get proper volume for showering you’d need some kind of extra speaker. I favor the iMainGoX case myself, but it would be nice to not need it.
