Project Zomboid Hit With Massive Setback

The Indie Stone Offices Ripped Off, Thieves Make Off With Project Zomboid Code

Project Zomboid is an intriguing little indie game that’s had its fair share of issues over the past year, but over the weekend it got hit with a massive setback that’s bound to push development back months, if not indefinitely. Yesterday, the offices of Project Zomboid developer The Indie Stone were broken into, and the thieves made off with the two laptops they’ve been using in the development of the game.

Normally, a theft of this kind wouldn’t really be that much of a setback for big time game companies like DICE or Bethesda, aside from the cost of replacing the computers. This time, however, the folks at The Indie Stone made a critical mistake: they rarely backed up Project Zomboid externally, instead using one laptop to back up the data on the other. This means that months of code were lost in the theft, and even though they have an older version of the code backed up offsite, it will take a very long time to get back to where they were prior to the theft.

Needless to say, the developers at The Indie Stone are all very disappointed, and it doesn’t help that the fine folks over at Reddit are taking every chance they get to rip them a new one – some are even questioning if this whole thing was a scam from the outset; that The Indie Stone never actually intended to deliver Project Zomboid in the first place, instead staging this theft partway through the development cycle and making off with everyone’s money.

Really, what can you say to that? Sometimes people are just plain stupid. Here’s to hoping that The Indie Stone can gather the willpower to start over from their last backup, but with this on top of all the setbacks Project Zomboid has suffered in the past, I wouldn’t blame them if they just decided to call it quits.

Scam company. Takes money, makes up multiple tragedies and the bloggers eat this shit up and get more attention and money. Broken buggy alpha version of the game that was paid for by suckers, and they shit on all their supporters on twitter. Enjoy the pageview.

Ah yes, you’ve figured it out! I’m deliberately saying that they aren’t scammers just so I can piss people like you off and score some extra pageviews. Seriously? They released a “broken buggy alpha version,” did they? Do you understand what the term “alpha,” means? Sorry, but I don’t believe that they would go through months and months of work to scam people out of – what was it, 5 pounds a pop? There are much easier ways to scam people out of their money.

As far as mistreating their supporters over Twitter, I’m not sticking up for what Chris Simpson did. Having just discovered he was the victim of a theft, he probably shouldn’t have taken to Twitter (while he was inebriated no less), and he said some things that he shouldn’t have. He just got ripped off, though, so I’m not going to rib him in a blog post that thousands and thousands of people will see just for a lapse in judgement. Redditors already have the ribbing on lockdown anyway.

Finally, do you have proof that they’re scamming people out of their money and that they’re making up these tragedies, or are we just forgoing the whole “innocent until proven guilty” thing these days?
