AT&T Might Be Unknowingly Already Selling Unlocked iPhone 4S

Bought An iPhone 4S Off Contract from AT&T? You Might Be Able to Unlock It Now!

All this business about Apple iPhone 4Scarriers locking and unlocking the phone over the last few days is confusing at best. Carriers haven’t exactly been transparent on whether they’re selling unlocked iPhone 4S units in the future or if the units they’re selling are actually already unlocked. AT&T, for example, originally announced an unlocked iPhone 4S on November, but it seems like unlocked phones might actually already be available.

According to sources, some people were actually able to unlock the iPhone 4S they bought off-contract from AT&T. All one has to do is sync the device with iTunes, and the unlocked statement below will pop up. Having an unlocked phone means you’ll be able to use different SIM cards and networks on your iPhone 4S if you wish. Someone was already able to use it with T-Mobile’s EDGE network.

The contract-free iPhone 4S devices cost a lot more upfront than ones with contract, of course. So if you’re interested in an unlocked phone, you have to be ready to pony up a lot of cash — $649, $749, and $849 for increasing standard Apple storage capacities, to be exact.
