THQ: Space Marine Sequel May Not Happen
THQ’s recent game, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, has been doing pretty well since it released last month. A lot of the Warhammer 40K fans I know simply love the game, and for everyone else that isn’t completely enthralled in the Warhammer universe, it serves as a nice little shooter to pass the time.

In fact, with the good reviews and excellent reception from the Warhammer community, you would think that a sequel would be a no-brainer for THQ. However, THQ’s Executive Vice President of Core Games, Danny Bilson, says that a sequel might not happen, telling Joystiq in a recent interview that there may not be room for a Space Marine sequel with their Warhammer MMO on the way:
It’s a really good game, it’s doing pretty well. In this world, honestly, you have to do exceptionally well to make any money, because the games are so expensive. We’ve already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play, and if you combine that it’s very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I’m not sure there’s room for Space Marine. We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there’s more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while.
I don’t know what you think, but it sounds like THQ is getting ahead of itself here. After all, we all know how fickle the MMO market can be, and by saying that they may not do a Space Marine sequel because an MMO is in the works makes it seem like they’re putting all of their eggs in one basket.
Never mind the fact that Space Marine left us with an open ending – one that was made specifically to leave space for sequels. So Warhammer fans are simply going to left without a conclusion? That’s great, THQ. It really is. Hopefully next time you’ll have the foresight to end a story before you start a new one? Please?
Still, that doesn’t mean that Space Marine is dead. Bilson said that they’re planning to release a fair amount of DLC for Space Marine, and he did leave the door open for more Space Marine later on down the road. Given the current obsession with MMOs though (seriously developers, you need to stop this), I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
