Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 Detailed, PS3 Version Coming Next Year

Square Enix Details Massive Final Fantasy XIV Update, PS3 Version Out Late Next Year

Remember Final Fantasy XIV? It’s that one MMO that had an absolutely terrible launch and has been a running joke in the MMO community for the the past year or so. Seriously, if you haven’t played it yet… well, don’t. At least not yet, because it’s still very, very broken.

So broken, in fact, that players still have yet to be charged a subscription fee. That’s all about to change though, because Square Enix has detailed their next Final Fantasy XIV update, which is said to be the update that’s actually going to make Final Fantasy XIV into a fun game. Make no mistake, this update is going to be absolutely massive. I’m not kidding either – I can’t even put the fixes in this post because it take over 5MB of PDFs to list them.

Basically, Final Fantasy XIV is getting completely overhauled. I wouldn’t be surprised if this new update doesn’t even leave a shadow of the old version after it launches. Since Square Enix is rolling out such a huge list of fixes, that means the free ride is over – in addition to announcing the fixes they plan to implement, Square Enix also said that they will begin charging a subscription fee between “late November and early December 2011.”

Just because they’re reinstating the subscription fee, however, doesn’t mean that the game will be completely fixed when they start charging you. Square Enix says that they’re planning to release the update in increments, with the full update being finished sometime in late 2012. That’s quite a long time to wait for the game to become playable again, and I’m not sure players are going to want to stick around and pay a subscription fee if it’s going to take that long for the update to be implemented.

Now, onto the PS3 version, which Square Enix announced will be out between October and December of next year. Will people want to wait that long for a game that, so far, has failed to leave the realm of mediocrity? Only time will tell, butlLet’s hope that update 2.0 makes Final Fantasy XIV into the game it should have been at launch, otherwise Square Enix might as well just give up.
