The Apple iPhone 4S‘ speech recognition has been lauded as one of the new features that will make smartphone users want to buy or upgrade. But while Siri is supposedly an “intelligent assistant,” who would’ve known it would be a witty one, too?
This is My Next‘s Joshua Topolsky has had the privilege to review the iPhone 4S before it ships or launches to the public. As part of his review, he was able to test Siri — the iPhone 4S’ speech recognition engine — extensively, and found out that the software is smart enough to know you’re being funny. That, or the software is probably just taking a trial-and-error approach in an attempt to better understand how humans think.
Tell Siri that you need to hide a body, and it will ask you what kind of place you are looking for — reservoirs, metal founries, mines, dumps or swamps. Ask Siri what the meaning of life is, and it will tell you it doesn’t know, but that it thinks “there’s an app for that.”
Siri can be funny, but it can also add a dash of sobriety at times. Ask Siri “Who’s your daddy?” and it will tell you “You are. Can we get back to work now?”
But sometimes one might wonder whether Siri is just being funny, or if it can help you do all sorts of shenanigans both on- and offline. Ask Siri “Do I make you horny?” and it will give you a list of “escorts fairly close to you.”
Trust Apple to put in some humor and Easter Eggs into its products. I suppose that Siri quotes and quips are going to spawn a new genre of humor websites akin to Damn You Autocorrect, which details funny and awkward things that the iPhone’s and other smartphone platforms’ autocorrect systems when you try to type in something.

I have Galaxy S2 and I have been using Assistant downloaded from Android market and it does everything as Siri does.
Does your Android Assistant offer you an escort nearby when you told her if you make her horny? I don’t think so. My point is Siri is the best (if not the only) phrase (not voice) recognition in the current mobile technology. Android has lots of works to catch up with. At its current level, Assistant is:
1. limited on what it can do
2. limited on what it can understand
3. can’t work as well as Siri with International English Accent
4. can’t work as well as Siri in noisy environment
I’m just trying to imagine the session when the programmers sat around a table (or a keg) and tried to come up with silliest questions SIRI was likely to get and the funniest answers.
Either that, or they’ve inadvertently produced the first working AI… and that would be a SIRIous coup for Apple!
