Nokia Reportedly Planning A Feature Phone OS Codenamed Meltemi

Nokia's Possible Future: Windows Phone for Smartphones & Meltemi for Feature Phones with Internet Connectivity

Nokia, one of the largest phone manufacturers in the world, has recently been losing its hold of the market. In order to get back some of its old flair, its operating systems Symbian and MeeGo were both axed in favor of Windows Phone 7. But Microsoft will not be able to provide Nokia an OS for its very cheap devices destined for emerging markets. Not even the upcoming Windows Phone 7 iteration for low-end phones called “Tango,” can respond to Nokia’s needs.

So word is that Nokia has been developing an operating system specifically for its feature phones — codenamed “Meltemi,” the OS is a top secret project that leaked online as of recent. The rumored Meltemi OS will ultimately replace Nokia’s Series 40 platform. The new OS will bring some smartphone features to low-spec handsets, and it will allow Nokia to sell these handsets for very cheap prices. That’s something that just can’t be accomplished with the Windows Phone platform. While Nokia refuses to confirm its existence, a rep from the company got in touch with BoyGeniusReport to say this:

While we don’t comment on future products or technologies, I can say that our Mobile Phones team has a number of exciting projects in the works that will help connect the next billion consumers to the Internet. When it comes to smartphones, as we have said repeatedly, Windows Phone is our smartphone platform of choice. We are confident in our efforts to build a joint ecosystem with Microsoft, and we are aggressively executing that strategy with operators, retailers, developers and other stakeholders.
