Samsung Nexus Prime Name Confirmed Again, Smartphone Coming “Very Shortly”

Samsung Says Ice Cream Sandwich Handset Announcement Is Very Close & Leaks Official Name

While not being announced today as initially expected, the Nexus Prime is causing quite a stir in the tech world in a week that’s mostly dominated by iPhone 4S launch news.

Earlier today we heard that Samsung and Google may have intentionally delayed the launch of the next Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich on board, lying to consumers in the process, in order for the search giant to make sure elements of its Android 4.0 version do not infringe on certain patents. At the same time we’ve seen an alleged photo captured by the Nexus Prime’s 8-megapixel camera, which would suggest the phone is already out in the wild and ready to be launched.

Now we’re told that the actual announcement of the device and its successive launch is closer than expected. In fact it looks like Samsung via UK Sales Director Andrew Glass has confirmed the name of the device:

“You will have an announcement of the Nexus Prime very shortly and will be seeing it in shops sooner than you think,” Glass told T3 following the Samsung Galaxy S II being crowned Phone of the Year at the T3 Gadget Awards 2011.

A rumor suggested on Monday that the Nexus Prime may be launched on November 3, more than three weeks from now, and that certainly doesn’t sound like it’s happening “sooner than you think.” Of course this could be all sales propaganda from a Samsung executive that’s in charge of sales. No surprise there!

What seems to be pretty clear so far is that the next Nexus handset will be called the Nexus Prime. Other names used for the same device in recent rumors are Galaxy Nexus or Droid Prime, although, at the end of the day we don’t really care what Sammy and Google will baptize it as long as we see it hit stores.

Are you buying the Nexus Prime as soon as it’s available?
