Xbox Companion App Lets You Control Xbox 360 from Windows Phone

Microsoft Has Big Plans for IPTV With Xbox LIVE; Windows Phone Will Be Your Remote Control

With Microsoft’s recent announcement of Xbox Live partnerships with video providers, the company has also announced that Windows Phone 7 handsets will be our remote control.

Computers and console games are no longer just for running programs and playing games. Tech companies want their devices to be channels for content distribution, also. As such, devices like the Xbox 360 are going to be a big part of the home theater, at least if Microsoft has its way.

While traditional DVD players, TVs and home theater systems have dedicated remote controls, the Xbox 360 will have its own remote control: the Windows Phone. A WP7 application called Xbox Companion will let users find content, get more information on shows and actually control what you’re watching.

The Windows Team Blog shares a few features and functions of Xbox Companion.

  • Find content. Xbox Companion lets users access Xbox LIVE Marketplace and search for games, music, movies and TV shows.
  • Information on current content. The Xbox Companion app gives users information on shows, games or movies currently being played.
  • Control your Xbox. Xbox Companion turns into a remote control with “controller mode,” which can be used to navigate the Xbox and control playback.

Microsoft’s partnership with content providers spans different industries, including distributors and cable channels, such as Comcast, HBO, Syfy, Bravo, BBC, Rogers, MediaSet, and others, spanning 20 countries. The Xbox 360 is already a central figure in home theaters with gaming, but with the integration of content from worldwide providers and a mobile remote control, it’s bound to be a bit more convenient and exciting to look for content and actually watch it.
